JOB SUMMARY Performs semi-skilled maintenance and repair work on roads and roadsides, drainage structures, and canals. Assists with snow removal and minimal landscaping.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS A valid Driver’s License accepted by the State of Utah is required at the time of hire, in order to operate a county vehicle. Must possess a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at the time of hire OR obtain the Class B CDL within sixty (60) days of hire date to operate a Salt Lake County vehicle. Must possess a current Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card at the time of hire OR obtain within thirty (30) days of hire date. Must attend flagging training and certify within sixty (60) days and recertify every two (2) years. Must attend a Defensive Driving course within the first two (2) weeks of hire and recertify as required by county policy. Must attend and be forklift certified within four (4) months (120 days) of hire. Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position. Will be subject to random alcohol and drug testing. May be subject to post accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Operate a variety of small hand tools & Equipment. • Conducts Weed spraying (backpack, ATV, and truck mount). • Mixing chemicals and spraying roadsides, canals, and county owned properties. • Performs Lawn mowing, trimming, edging, pruning, weeding, and tree trimming. • Assists in maintaining and repairing irrigation systems. • Sets up traffic warning signs, traffic cones, barricades, and flags traffic. • Performs crack sealing (winter months) • Snow removal sidewalks parking lots and roads • Provides code enforcement mowing of vacant properties. • Maintains tools and equipment by keeping them clean, repaired, and stored securely when not in use; performs minor repairs. • Complies with OSHA and/or MUTCD safety rules and regulations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA) Knowledge of: • Methods, materials, and equipment necessary to perform road/ irrigation system maintenance, roadside and road maintenance/repair, snow removal work and some landscaping • Equipment operating principles and procedures • Hazards and safety precautions common to road construction, weed spraying, roadside and road maintenance/repair, snow removal work and some landscaping • Pertinent OSHA and/or MUTCD safety rules and regulations • Salt Lake County geography • Blue Stakes

Skills and Abilities: • Operate a light truck (pick-up) One ton truck, bob-tail truck, 10-wheeler dump truck, sander unit, snow-plow unit, and other equipment including front end loader. • Use standard and specialized tools and materials common to several trades. • Follow verbal and written procedures and instructions. • Perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions. • Prepare daily records of work performed. • Keep in compliance with and follow standard practices and procedures common to road/ storm drain construction, roadside and road maintenance/repair, snow removal work and some landscaping. • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other Departments/Divisions, and the general public.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This position requires extensive physical labor (approximately 90% of the time) including, but not restricted to: lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, standing, walking on uneven ground, and climbing ladders. Applicants must be able to carry objects over 50 lbs. (occasionally up to 100 lbs. with some assistance). This position also involves almost constant exposure to extreme weather conditions, dirt, dust, fumes, chemicals, smoke, and loud noises. Work is occasionally performed in confined spaces and at heights up to three (3) stories. Employees are exposed to high volumes of traffic while performing road maintenance work. IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION This position is subject to being called to work prior to or after the scheduled shift. In an emergency event or an officially declared State of Emergency, responds as directed to ensure the restoration of essential public services, facilities, and infrastructure.
