The Work You Will Do:

This position is a core member of the Office of Resilience and Coastal Protection’s (RCP) Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserves (BBAP) and will provide technical, planning, procedural and budget recommendations to the BBAP Manager. The primary purpose of this Water Quality Technician position is to provide data management, datasonde coordination and deployment, water quality research coordination and sampling, and data collection support to the BBAP Manager and Water Quality Specialist. Other stakeholder outreach and programmatic coordination and assistance activities may also be required.

Where You Will Work:

The DEP’s office in Miami is called the Biscayne Bay Environmental Center and is located in the middle of the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve within the Pelican Harbor Park and Marina in Miami-Dade County.

    Pay: $20.00 per hour.

    Your Specific Responsibilities:

    In carrying out the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected at all times to be aware of and abide by the Department’s Standards of Conduct, as well as any and all departmental and/or work unit rules, directives, policies, procedures, and/or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position.

    The primary purpose of this position is to provide data management, datasonde coordination and deployment, water quality research coordination and sampling, and data collection support to the BBAP Manager and Water Quality Specialist. Other educational outreach and programmatic coordination and assistance activities may also be required.

    Database Management and Data Reporting:

    • Conducts general database management and multi-step quality assurance and quality control of internal databases

    • Updating of Standard Operating Procedures, manuals, and reports

    • Interpretation of data with a focus on identifying environmental stressors

    • Conducts analyses as needed to inform management decisions

    Datasonde Management:

    • Datasonde deployment and retrieval, including boat-based, land-based, and in-water work

    • Memorizing and working within procedures and techniques for performing calibrations, maintenance and deployment

    • Scheduling and tracking maintenance as well as supplies and equipment ordering

    Natural Resource Assessment and Research:

    • Conducts resource monitoring and field data collecting including, telemetry maintenance and installation, datasonde deployment and maintenance, water quality bottle sampling, etc.

    • Snorkel or kayak, as required

    • Pilots and trailers DEP boats, as needed

    • Reading and disseminating information gleaned from literature reviewal

    Education/Outreach and Other Program Initiatives:

    • Communication with other partners involved in data collection and natural resource monitoring in the area

    • Fostering stewardship of and appreciation for Biscayne Bay and informing management actions

    • Other administrative needs, as required

    When appropriate represents the DEP by attending all necessary meetings and functions as requested, attends training programs (where funds allow), assists with education and outreach activities as needed.

    May aid in the event of an emergency at the DEP field offices, including pre-storm preparation, post-storm clean-up and replacement of stored goods to ready field office for operation after a storm; or other services assigned.

    Snorkels or SCUBA dives to support research field work.

    Knowledge, skills and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position:

    Requirements:

    • Knowledge of natural resource and environmental data/literature for status and trends

    • Skill with Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, Excel software

    • Skill in underwater field work with a current SCUBA certification

    • Skill with public speaking

    • Skill with organization and writing

    • Skill with coordination of people and logistical planning

    • Skill with basic CPR/first aid certification and small boat handling and trailering, or the ability to acquire these skills

    • Ability to be flexible, multitask, and meet tight deadlines

    • Ability to work independently and complete tasks with attention to detail under minimal supervision

    • Ability to determine work priorities, ensure proper completion of work assignments

    • Ability to swim/snorkel under rigorous conditions per DEP policies

    • Ability to work outdoors and in water, as well as working in an office and laboratory environment

    • Ability to interact with a variety of other governmental offices, non-governmental organizations, the public, and a variety of programs and administrative levels within DEP to successfully complete tasks

    • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with a diverse range of people

    • Ability to be self-directed and outgoing, take ownership of projects, and work professionally with manager and co-workers to manage responsibilities and resolve challenges that arise

    • Ability to lift a minimum of 35 lbs.

    Preferred:

    • Knowledge of natural resource management

    • Knowledge of Southeast Florida flora and fauna

    • Skill working with multi-parameter datasondes (YSI EXO2) and telemetry units (YSI TurnKey and DB600 Ai1 systems)

    • Skill with data analysis and analytical software (Rstudio, ArcGIS, Primer, Python, etc.) and

    • Skill with database management, especially with large datasets

    • Skill with Adobe Acrobat

    • Skill with water quality sampling

    Licensure/registration/certification requirements:Certification from a nationally recognized SCUBA agency.

    Working hours: (A) Daily from 9am to 5pm (B) Total hours in workweek 40 (C) Explain any variation in work (split shift, rotation, etc.) Weekend and evening work may be required to support outreach activities.

    Minimum Qualifications:A Bachelor of Science degree in one of the marine environmental or biological sciences from an accredited college or university; and one year of verifiable related experience; or any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described above, for a total of five years.Regular local travel throughout Southeast Florida and occasional long-distance travel. Valid Driver License. Must be a certified scuba diver (Open Water minimum) who can provide documentation of at least 15 logged dives. Must have prior approval and meet the diving and/or snorkeling validation requirements in the DEP Underwater Operations Manual. This position is medically monitored.

    Preferred Qualifications: A master’s degree in one of the marine environmental or biological sciences. Advanced Open Water and Nitrox scuba certifications.
