The Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Scholarship, Division of Veterinary Resources (DVR), has a job opportunity for an Assistant Animal Care Technician to work at the Medical Campus on a temporary basis.

Base Pay Range: $18 - $20 Hourly, based on experience.

CORE JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Animal Care Technician supports Animal Care Technicians and Principal Investigators/Scientists in the performance of duties and procedures necessary for the completion of basic and applied research protocols. Further, the Assistant Animal Care Technician facilitates experiments by ensuring that all facility and animals needs are addressed in an efficient and timely manner.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assists with the restraint and handling of laboratory animals, surgical preparations, inductions, and maintenance of anesthesia.

  • Provides post-operative monitoring and recovery care to animals, including pain and distress assessment, and administration of analgesics and other medications, as prescribed.

  • Performs minor surgical procedures and assists in major surgical procedures.

  • Cleans, disinfects, sterilizes, and packages surgical instruments.

  • Maintains inventory and stock levels of supplies and equipment.

  • Cleans and sanitizes animal cages and holding rooms.

  • Feeds, waters, weighs, and transports animals.

  • Performs physical exams, clinical assessments, and diagnostic procedures and treatments and records relevant data.

  • Assists with the euthanasia and necropsy of animals.

  • Participation in the department’s Emergency Response Team as Essential Personnel is required.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent

Experience:

Minimum 6 mos - 1 year of relevant experience.

Animal research facility experience in the handling of multiple animal species including Non-Human Primates (NHP) and Virus Antigen Free (VAF) rodents is preferred. Any appropriate combination of relevant education and/or work experience may be considered.

Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends is required. Must be able to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds without assistance.

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
