The Assistant Professor of Clinical will have clinical and research responsibilities within the Department of Medicine. The incumbent will serve as an attending physician in the Division of Infectious Diseases, with focus on the care and treatment of adult patients with infectious diseases on medical and surgical services. This includes outpatient care, as well as inpatient attending responsibilities for the division (on inpatient units at UHealth and/or Jackson Memorial Hospital). He/she will be involved with medical student, resident, and fellow education. He/she may be asked to lead an educational or administrative project within the division or to participate in research programs within the division.

Thus, the incumbent will be expected to participate in didactic teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as attending and actively participating in seminars and other educational lectures. Teaching also includes participating in the supervision of medical students, residents, and fellows who are involved in direct patient care. As a faculty member, we also anticipate that you will be an active participant – attending meetings, Grand Rounds, and other University scholarly activities.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Awarded degree of M.D. or D.O.

  • Completed infectious diseases fellowship from an ABIM recognized fellowship program

  • Valid American Board Certification in Internal Medicine

  • Valid and unrestricted Florida Medical License or eligible to apply

  • Board Certified/Board Eligible for Infectious Diseases

    DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

  • There will be work on weekends, nights and holidays based on the needs of the Division

  • Must be able to physically respond when on-call

  • Hospital maintains employee health and infection control programs in place to reduce risk to employee

ADDITIONAL JOB SUMMARY:

The Medical Director for Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotics Program (OPAT) is appointed by hospital leadership for the respective discipline. The Medical Director shall be a member of the active Medical Staff, and shall be administratively responsible for working collaboratively with hospital leadership in addressing issues of common concern related to patient care taking place within their discipline. On an annual basis, the performance of the Medical Director shall be evaluated by the Chief Medical Officer based on the effectiveness of his/her leadership role and the satisfactory execution of duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collaborate with hospital leadership to:

  • Improve the quality of patient care and patient satisfaction

  • Ensure proper training, education, and oversight for physicians, nurses, and other staff members for the respective discipline

  • Address faculty physician recruitment and retention issues in the discipline;

  • identify and help resolve conflict between the medical staff of the discipline and hospital staff

  • Support and incentivize clinical research priorities with faculty physicians of the discipline

  • Participate in strategic planning;

  • Assure availability of physician faculty in the division for consultation and emergency coverage

  • Assure the appropriate use of hospital resources

  • Participate in peer review, performance improvement, utilization review and risk management and patient safety activities as they relate to the discipline.

  • Interpret and help to ensure medical staff compliance with hospital and medical staff bylaws, policies, procedures, rules and regulations and applicable regulatory standards

  • Serve as an active member of medical staff and hospital committees

  • Support risk management review related to faculty physicians in the discipline

  • Help to resolve complaints and grievances related to faculty physicians in the discipline

  • Is part of the escalation process for unresolved critical patient care issues related to the discipline

  • Participate in root cause analyses on the service and when content expertise is needed in RCA’s for other services

  • Serve as a liaison to other disciplines to improve care coordination or to resolve concerns

  • Works with cancer center leadership to identify and appoint leaders for the Site Disease Groups

  • Perform such other functions and duties as may be assigned or requested by the hospital leadership
