APP Team Manager - Medicine, Hematology - Full Time

The Supervisor, Advance d Practice Providers supervises advance d practice providers (APPs) ( i.e. Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants etc.). Key responsibilities of this position include , but are not limited to , onboarding and mentorship of new staff , development, review, and implementation of unit specific competencies, and annual evaluations. This role also works directly with staff, administration, medical directors, and other relevant stakeholders to assure appropriate utilization of all APPs. The Supervisor, Advance d Practice Providers provide s advocacy to al l Inpatient APPs and integrate s current knowledge of professional issues, trends in health care and technological advances into scope of practice. This position participates in th e collection of research data and quality improvement of patient care within the acute and outpatient care areas.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Conducts or participates in multidisciplinary rounds and ensures appropriate and quality care for patients.

  • Serves as a liaison and advocate between the APP and hospital leadership, department heads, and collaborating physicians.

  • Assist APPs in clinical integration upon hire and throughout time of employment.

  • Identifies APP learning needs and provides learning experiences to meet those needs. Integrates and informs APP o f current knowledge of professional issues, trends in health care and technological advances into APPs scope of practice.

  • Coordinates assignments of preceptors to advanced practice providers. Provides coordination of APP students with university liaisons.

  • Identifies opportunities and challenges to promote full scope of practice in the advance practice model.

  • Ensures and coordinates standardization of advanced practice processes between patient care services and collaborative teams.

  • Ensures compliance with regulatory and maintains credentialing, competencies, and professional standards for all APPs in the service line.

  • Provides coordination of coverage during weekdays and weekends between satellites, hospitals, and outpatient area .

  • Engages and empowers staff by sharing decision-making, delegating, providing choice and fostering autonomy and adaptability. Leads and supports APP staff during periods of transition; communicates purpose and empowers staff to embrace change.

  • Contributes to the design, development and implementation of strategic and operational initiatives. Leads staff during the implementation and evaluation of new initiatives at the unit, division and department level.

  • Prioritizes competing demands while integrating strategic plan into daily operations.

  • Recruits, hires, and facilitates training and orientation. Manages, recognizes, and rewards performance. Provides ongoing formal and informal performance feedback.

  • Collects data for patient and program evaluation and participates in quality assessment and improvement/patient experience activities.

  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures . Ensures employees are trained on the controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

    CORE QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:

    Master’s degree in relevant field

    Certification and Licensing:

    Valid Florida Licensure in relevant field

    Acute Care Board Certification required

    BLS certification

    ACLS certification

    Experience:

    Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in clinical practice and Minimum of two years in a supervisory role.

    Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form

  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships

  • Ability to exercise sound judgement in making critical decisions

  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others

    Department Specific Functions

    Job Summary (Purpose and Function):

    The Advanced Supervisor of Inpatient Hematology role at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is to ensure quality of care through consultation, collaboration, continuing education, certification and evaluation and supervision of Inpatient APPs. The APP supervisor has a clinical role and administrative role. May practice in the following clinical settings: UMHC/Sylvester or University of Miami Hospital.

    The Hematology APP at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine may practice in all or some of the following clinical settings:

    University of Miami Hospital- 1400 NW 12 Ave, Miami, Florida 33136

    University of Miami Hospital and Clinics/Sylvester Cancer Center-1475 NW 12th Ave. Miami, Florida 33136

    The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

    Accountabilities:

    I. Clinical

  • Assesses the physical and psychosocial status of Hematology clients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies.

  • Recognizes deviations from normal in the physical assessment. Works in collaboration with a physician in formulating treatment plans for health problems and follow-up.

  • Writes/recommends prescriptions for medication, blood products based upon laboratory results, routine diagnostic and follow-up studies, therapeutic measures, and post-discharge care in accordance with written practice protocols.

  • Requests/recommends written consultation from physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate and quality patient care.

  • Assess and follow consult patients independent of physician when needed.

  • Interprets and evaluates findings of studies/tests and intervenes/recommends accordingly.

  • Advises collaborating physician of appropriate information regarding patient care and reports to the physician the actions provided/recommended to the patients.

  • Evaluates the quality of care provided and recommends changes for improvement.

  • Facilitates the appropriate actions and/or implementation of therapeutic plans that are consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of the clients.

  • Assists in the management of family dynamics and coping mechanisms during acute and chronic phases of patient care.

  • Conducts or participates in multidisciplinary rounds and ensures appropriate and quality care for patients.

  • Performs patient triage and determines the urgency of physician’s evaluation.

  • Provides symptom management for side effects related to hematology oncologic treatment.

  • Rotates with colleagues working weekends and holidays.

  • Interacts with admitting physician, hospitalist and other multidisciplinary teams.

  • Prioritizes consults to present to attending physician and rounds with attending daily on patients as appropriate.

  • Writes consult/Inpatient note, discharge note and dictates as appropriate .

    II. Supervisory

  • Management oversight of the APPs practice

  • Make schedule for Inpatient service.

  • Coach, mentor, and develop staff through innovative mechanisms (e.g., peer reviews) designed to improve performance.

  • Maintain awareness of team engagement; identify and respond to key challenges and areas of opportunity.

  • In collaboration with senior leadership, explore, recommend, develop, and implement new opportunities to optimize clinical care and enable better utilization of APPs to drive UHealth growth and expansion.

  • Supervise and prioritize resource allocation to ensure that service needs are met, while maintaining UHealth’s quality standards.

  • Oversee the overall operation of the APP practice, ensuring appropriate and efficient provision of services to meet clinical-programs and UHealth goals and objectives .

  • Oversee APP billing practices and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.

  • Foster an engaged and learning environment by promoting APP participation in continuing education programs (e.g., CME/CEU).

  • Support academic-degree achievement to enhance professional knowledge and clinical practice.

  • Develop and oversee a comprehensive orientation/onboarding program for APPs.

    Minimum of five years in Hematology experience as a Nurse practitioner or PA

    State License Acute Care Board Certification required
