Amazon Manufacturing Engineer, Kuiper Payload Processing Facility in Merritt Island, Florida

Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Key job responsibilities

We are looking for a Hardware Development Engineer to design, build and maintain electrical ground support harnesses at the Project Kuiper Payload Processing Facility.

The ideal candidate is comfortable in a highly technical and collaborative setting and is able to interpret technical requirements and turn them into actionable steps.

Key job responsibilities

• Plan and optimize harness design schedules.

• Manage harness manufacturing inventory and maintain adequate materials

• Translate customer requirements and design harness schematics

• Manage harness manufacturing through external vendors and internal manufacturing teams

• Triage failed harnesses, disposition nonconformities, and manage repair work

• Continuously improve harness design, manufacturing, and repair processes

• Author and implement work instructions and standard processes

• Collaborate with harness design team including both engineers and technicians to efficiently deliver working harnesses to internal customers

• On-call support for harnesses in both domestic and international production facilities

• Must be willing and able to perform extended travel up to 25% annually, either domestically or internationally as business needs demand

Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

A day in the life

A Harness Manufacturing Engineer spends the majority of their day leading electrical ground harness design, fabrication, and repair. They will work with Value Stream Leads to identify emerging harness needs for upcoming missions, design harnesses, review designs, manage harness procurements, and write and perform safe-to-mate procedures. They will address root cause of failures and issues, and implement production control and optimization strategies. They will implement engineering best practices in a safe and repeatable manner, implement efficiency improvements and reduce non-conformances.

About the team

The Test Rack Engineering team, located at the Project Kuiper Payload Processing Facility (PPF), is the electronics and software competency for the launch team in Florida. We provide electrical ground support equipment to our satellite processing zone customers: test racks, harnesses, instrumentation, and supporting software solutions. We often leverage other electronics, software, and networking teams to deliver core components; however, we hold ourselves accountable for diving deep into the systems we deliver.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in manufacturing, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, material science or other related discipline, or relevant experience

  • 2+ years of hardware design and validation of components, subsystems and systems experience

  • 1+ year experience using Siemens NX or other CAD Software

  • 1 + year experience using PDM software to control the design lifecycle

  • Able to obtain and maintain a US Passport and must meet customs entry requirements to include but not limited to: Yellow Fever vaccine and other immunization requirements as recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

  • Able to pass Kennedy Space Center background checks

Preferred Qualifications

  • IPC-620 certification

  • Harness Design experience using Capital Logic and Capital Harness software

  • Experience performing electrical checkouts on Spacecraft hardware

  • Familiarity with Launch Vehicle facility harnessing

  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production

  • Experienced with various automated manufacturing processes, including assembly and test methods at component level, subsystem, and system level

  • Experienced with handling and tracking systems for continuous material flow to manufacturing lines

  • Highly familiar with QTP/ATP and production test methods, and automated data acquisition and collection

  • Formal training/certification in Operational Excellence Systems (Lean, 5S, Six Sigma, etc.)

  • Strong organizational, analytical, root cause analysis and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills

  • Able to stand for long periods of time and perform repetitive assembly operations

  • Able to climb and down ladders, work in tight spaces, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, and stretching may be required to perform the functions of this position.

  • Able to lift at least 25 lbs. unassisted
