Eaton Corporation Senior Chief Engineer - Power Electronics in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin

Eaton Research Labs (ERL) has an exciting and rewarding position of a Senior Chief Engineer in Power Conversion and Engineering Systems to initiate, lead, and create research and technology developmental emerging technology programs. Our ERLs are focused on innovation for organic growth. This unique team focuses on future megatrends and keeps the pulse on how our industries continue to grow and change in areas like energy systems, additive manufacturing, grid intelligence and low and medium voltage power electronics. By maintaining a focus on the future, our ERLs are positioned to propose projects that will keep our businesses prepared to address the trends of tomorrow. This position reports to our Global Technology Director (GTD) for Power Electronics. This position will be based in Menomonee Falls, WI. Relocation assistance is available.

Our team is looking for a recognized authority in power electronics who will own the technology strategy and execution for broad applications in the space. This includes attracting talented resources, government funding and establishing key partnerships both internally and externally to drive technological advancement. In this position, you will be responsible for meeting the schedule, scope of work, cost, technical targets and report preparation for all research and innovation themes under your control.

What you’ll do:

You will ultimately bring a strong blend of technical knowledge and solid business acumen to our team. You will also serve as subject matter expert within the area of Power Conversion globally for all of Eaton. This includes developing and maintaining relationships with the external technical community, academia, national labs, funding government agencies, active participation in industry or technical groups, international events, publishing papers, etc. Finally, as a subject matter expert internally and externally, you will be expected to mentor junior staff and act as consultant to internal Eaton business & customers.

Job Responsibilities:

• Creates and defines research focus themes, technology strategy and complex global technology realization programs involving multiple stakeholders external to Eaton utilizing our internal project execution processes, including project reviews, design reviews, and technical reviews. External partners include universities, National Labs, government entities, manufacturing partners, etc.

• Works with GTD’s and Technology Managers to define research programs and write and win successful Government proposals that are aligned with Federal Government goals and Eaton’s Divisions growth needs.

• Works with GTDs to define technical competencies and capabilities that will be required to support technology strategy, this includes defining lab technical capabilities and requirements, works with GTDs to attract technical talent.

• As the technical leader of the Power Electronics, creates emerging Power Electronics research programs based on breakthrough technologies for energy transition, electrical transportation, and more electrical aerospace applications.

• Advance state of the art Power Electronics as well as identify and develop commercialization opportunities with diverse global Eaton businesses.

• Owns technical leadership and collaborate with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural globally distributed teams, provide technical direction and mentor younger engineers.

• Understand program/project risks and influence key stakeholders to make pivot/persevere/kill decisions

• Influences, resolves and communicates major changes in projects or programs to cross functional teams across all levels in the company

• As recognized global authority in his/her field of expertise, the Senior Chief Engineer is also responsible for influencing the research focus of university consortiums and national lab initiatives.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

• PhD from an accredited institution required.

• Minimum of 15 years of professional experience required.

• Must be eligible to work in the US without sponsorship

• Experience writing proposals and winning contracts with the US Department of Energy or Department of Defense

Preferred qualifications:

• PhD in Power Conversion / Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power Electronics

• Track record of writing and winning Government proposals to develop next generation technologies in Power Electronics and Power Conversion for Energy Transition and/or Transportation Electrification

Skills:

• Extensive research experience in system architecture and device level of low and medium voltage (kV class) power conversion, medium voltage motor drive technology, drive/converter topologies, high-power electronics (kW and MW class); electric machines and controls; electrification of vehicles, energy storage, grid connected inverters; alternative power generation and distribution, and power systems engineering, including creating specifications, defining hypothesis for research, creating technical solution concepts, prototyping hardware to validate hypotheses and documenting results.

• Experience with the design and analysis of magnetic components for power electronics circuits—such as high-frequency inductors and transformers—and an extensive knowledge of the materials and construction techniques and how they affect their characteristics.

• Understanding how thermal management affects the overall performance of the system, appreciation for the trade-offs necessary to achieve designs that meet performance requirements and cost objective solutions.

• Track record of implementing partnerships with Universities and National Labs to develop applied research in Power Electronics.

• Excellent English communication and presentation skills (oral and written).

The expected annual salary range for this role is $150000.03 - $220000.04 a year.
