Position overview:
SLAC¿s Project Management Office (PMO) manages infrastructure and capital projects from conceptual project development, through design, construction and operation. We plan and develop high-value, quality, long-term cost effective facilities and landscapes that enhance research objectives at SLAC, embrace our partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE) and Stanford University.
We are seeking a Projects Controls Manager to lead a team of project controls professionals to provide centralized support services for a portfolio of high risk and complex projects at SLAC. A successful candidate for this position is expected to have a strong background in the implementation of project management principles and concepts, in-depth knowledge of DOE Orders including O 413.3B, extensive knowledge of project controls processes/procedures and systems, and a drive for continuous process improvement. The Projects Controls Manager is responsible for managing a service center and team of around 20 contractor and FTE Project Control Specialists to support project management teams in developing, implementing, and maintaining a broad range of project controls practices (e.g., planning, scheduling, control, reporting, and performance measurement requirements) throughout the project lifecycle.
SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park; CA. Given the nature of this position, SLAC is open to on-site and hybrid work options. Remote work from US.
Your specific responsibilities include :
Recruit, mentor, evaluate, develop, and lead project controls staff; assign work and resolve workload distribution issues to address current and future demand.
Determine the tools and approaches used to address planning, scheduling, and controls requirements.
Establish and maintain standards, systems description, procedures, software applications, protocols, and practices in the Project Management Office that are implemented on all SLAC projects in a graded approach based on project cost, risk, and complexity.
Interface with governing bodies, regulators, and federal counterparts on project planning and controls issues and requests.
Select software, methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria needed to deliver best in class project controls support for SLAC project
Identify and disseminate project best practices throughout PMO and all SLAC directorates.
Work with customers to anticipate future demand and secure the necessary resources to satisfy PMO requirements and standards on behalf of projects.
May be involved in developing and modifying laboratory policies or practices.
Perform other duties as assigned.
To be successful in this position you will bring:
Bachelor¿s degree with 10+ years of project planning and controls experience, 5+ years of supervisory experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Demonstrated project controls or relevant project support experience including planning, budgeting, and scheduling on projects over $50 million value.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with earned-value management systems, reporting, and capitalization standards,.
Comprehensive understanding of projects and operational needs to support projects.
Demonstrated expertise in all foundational aspects of project planning and controls, including planning, budgeting, and scheduling.
Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving, negotiating skills and the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
Demonstrated experience in managing a diverse team of project professionals or other support staff.
Experience in conflict management, performance management, career development, succession planning, and workload distribution.
Extensive understanding and experience of PMBOK and applicable DOE Orders for project controls including EVMS techniques and other applicable project management policies and procedures.
Preferred in-depth knowledge and experience using project controls applications and tools including Primavera P6 and Deltek Cobra (or equivalent scheduling and cost processing tools).
Ability to use professional concepts and project objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
Ability to adapt to changes, be creative with solutions, and have a tolerance for ambiguity.
Must possess excellent organizational skills, supported bysignificant attention to detail and perseverance.
Experience in leading and mentoring junior level staff.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a cross-functional team with diverse technical backgrounds.
In addition, preferred requirements include:
- Solid and demonstrated understanding of DOE Orders such as DOE Order 413.3B
Certifications and Licenses:

The expected pay range for this position is $207,148 - $239,521 SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
