Position Overview:

The Accelerator Technologist III - Metal Finishing works under general supervision and performs assignments of intermediate to advanced complexity in metal finishing and field installations and work across other areas such as mechanical assembly, and/or machine maintenance as needed.

The Technologist III is highly proficient and will independently plan and conduct a block of work as a complete project, or as a portion of a larger and more diverse project, with strict adherence to site-specific safety as well as work planning and control (WPC) protocols. Assignments may be of a scheduling and planning nature, coordinating work performed by other individuals, training other technicians in advanced techniques, developing and implementing advanced techniques including auxiliary electrode usage, developing and implementing processes to finish parts outside of plating tanks using pumps and tubing, and ensuring efficient use of resources.

The Technologist will work in radiation-controlled areas. Will communicate and coordinate with line supervision as to effort status, progress, and completion timelines. Must be able to follow all SLAC safety rules and regulations and identify areas for improvement.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

Your Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Perform metal finishing processes, following procedures and controls with an extremely high degree of competence and care using lifting equipment, pumps, filters, power supplies, tooling and fixtures.

  • Uses travelers, procedures, drawings, to carry out sometimes complicated finishing tasks.

  • Inspect parts and communicates any deviations to Metal Finishing Supervisor before reworking parts.

  • Review and advise on how to clarify and improve metal finishing procedures. Advise as to how processes were completed historically with opinions / advice on the relative effectiveness of those procedures.

  • Develop, assemble, install, and test complex auxiliary electrodes and pumping setups for parts needing complex geometries plated and using flow through techniques. Exercise an advanced understanding of techniques used to finishing parts with complex geometries.

  • Maintains shop cleanliness and organization to serve safety and quality goals.

  • Perform field assignments for accelerator installations and maintenance when needed.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in metal finishing or have an equivalent combination of vocational school, on the job training and experience.

  • Must be able to perform assignments of intermediate to advanced complexity in metal finishing and mechanical assembly.

  • Ability to design and fabricate his/her own tooling and fixtures.

  • Familiar with standard shop practices; be skilled in the use of hoists, forklifts, rigging, and other types of handling equipment.

  • Extensive knowledge of various electroplating, cleaning, and electropolishing techniques, equipment and solutions.

  • Must know basic math to calculate and understand surface area calculations and current density calculations.

  • Must be able to use technical language used to convey finishing techniques and quality requirements.

  • Experience with developing written procedures.

  • Must be able to read, understand and follow mechanical drawings in order to understand metal finishing requirements.

  • Possess ability to coordinate, plan, and organize tasks.

  • Demonstrate excellent verbal/written communications skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to routinely meet production quality and schedule requirements while effectively balancing quality and quantity of work.

  • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to comply with good shop practices and safety requirements.

  • Ability to demonstrate good judgment while facilitating the safe and efficient flow of work.

  • Ability to demonstrate the understanding of when, how and where to seek assistance from technical and/or safety experts as well as report up through line management when appropriate.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the basic concepts related to metal finishing and specific environmental, health and safety hazards.

  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License and a good driving record for driving vehicles around SLAC site.

The expected pay range for this position is $52.81 (Step 1) - $64.03 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
