Health First Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician - Dialysis in Melbourne, Florida

POSITION SUMMARY

The Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) is responsible for providing care under the direct visual supervision of a Registered Nurse for patients receiving dialysis treatments. The CCHT is fully engaged in performing regular scheduled disinfection on water and dialysis equipment and maintaining accurate records to ensure patient safety.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Responsible for reporting and documenting all new and unusual incidents, information, complaints, or problems to the RN.
  2. Supports the Health First commitment to Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAI) activities by promoting and assisting in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment to enhance patient satisfaction.
  3. Uses the organizational values to guide a prompt and professional response to every customer request every time.
  4. With documented competency and proficiency, may set up and prime equipment as directed by the RN for renal replacement therapies (hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement, and peritoneal dialysis therapies).
  5. Welcomes assigned patients and inquires as to their well-being since their last treatment, reporting any complaints or observations to the RN.
  6. Evaluates vascular access for patency and reports any unusual findings to RN.
  7. Obtains necessary pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weight, reporting any unusual findings to RN.
  8. Performs vascular access cannulation and reports any difficulties or unusual findings to RN.
  9. Calculates and enters individual patients’ dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal; treatment time; Sodium (Na) modeling; and UF modeling as prescribed.
    1. Ensures appropriate safety alarms are enabled.
    2. Accurately and timely records information regarding vital signs and treatment parameters into the SCM Hemodialysis Flowsheet with initial identification.
    3. Initiates hemodialysis treatment according to prescribed orders including setting blood flow rate (QB) and dialysate flow rate (QD) as prescribed by the attending nephrologist.
    4. Collects, labels, and ensures timely delivery of specimens to laboratory per facility policy.
    5. Evaluates intradialytic problems and provides intervention as prescribed by physician’s order or as directed by RN.
    6. Monitors patient’s response to dialysis therapy and reports any unusual findings to RN.
    7. Obtains vital signs prior to reinfusion; performing all relevant functions necessary for the discontinuation of treatment and reports any change or unusual findings to RN.
    8. Performs and documents any intervention for unusual patient status and documents patient’s response to intervention.
    9. Evaluates patient’s vascular access during treatment including arterial and venous monitoring pressures, provides appropriate intervention as needed, documents and reports any unusual findings to RN.
    10. Discontinues dialysis treatment according to established procedures.
    11. Evaluates patient’s heart rate and blood pressures prior to termination of venous access and reports any unusual findings to RN. Obtains hemostasis and applies appropriate dressings.
    12. Evaluates the patient prior to discharge and reports any unusual findings to the RN.
    13. Utilizes Health First computer system for order management and patient documentation.
    14. Demonstrates personal accountability for economically using supplies and caring for equipment.
    15. Demonstrates basic understanding of LEAN principles and may engage in activity to reduce waste or improve processes.
    16. Contributes to the unit productivity in favorable ways by demonstrating good planning, organization, and time management.
    17. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Licensure: Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver’s License.
  • Certification: o Must possess and maintain Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) credential from the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC). o Conditional and time limited waiver for CCHT requirement may apply to internal associates who complete their CCHT within 18 months of transition to new role (grandfather provision). o Must hold current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider completion card prior to start date and maintain.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: o Positive attitude and interpersonal skills necessary to relate well with customers and peers. o Flexibility with schedule, hours vary.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certification: Advanced Certification from the NNCC (CCHT-A).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend and stoop for up to 12 hours, generally with 2-3 short breaks.
  • Visual acuity with ability to differentiate colors, and hand-eye coordination to perform technical tasks.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds unassisted, 2-3 times per hour.

  • Ability to respond appropriately to STAT service request.
