Job Purpose and Impact

As in-house lawyer you will be part of a team based in Mechelen, Belgium, reporting to the Country Lead Lawyer for Belgium. You will independently handle legal affairs mainly in the areas of commercial and corporate law with minimal oversight from other lawyers. You will act as a strong contributor to the team and business stakeholders, will manage a large scope and volume of projects and work, closely aligned with the law group’s objectives and business objectives. In this role, you will engage with global law team members and select leaders across the business while building strong external networks. You will apply expert business, organizational and industry knowledge to support the law team and business.

Key Accountabilities

  • Interacting with people at all levels of the organization as well as with other members of the legal team and external counsel, you will handle both day to day and complex legal work in the areas of mainly commercial and corporate law.

  • Monitoring new legislation, its potential impact to the organization and help identifying legal risks to the business.

  • Independently structure, draft, review and negotiate contracts, policies and other documents related to a variety of commercial, corporate, financial or operational matters.

  • Supporting Belgian litigation and managing matters in a time and cost-efficient way.

  • Responsible for corporate housekeeping matters with respect to the Belgian legal entities.

  • Independently drive desired legal outcomes on matters with support from the team while bringing positive impact for both the law team and the business.

  • Support the success of the law team and business, counseling across a broad range of legal and business issues, proactively addressing legal risk and legal needs with the team and developing deep understanding of the business, its risk tolerance and goals.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with external network to ensure awareness of industry and external developments and develop and deepen relevant subject matter expertise knowledge.

  • Contribute to an inclusive and collaborative work environment where diversity and equity are valued.

  • Provide expert thought leadership in your field and work with limited direction, using additional research and interpretation to identify issues or problems.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Qualified Belgian lawyer with a Master´s degree in Law.

  • A good legal command of Belgian commercial and corporate law is required. Experience in competition law and bio-energy law (RED II) is an asset.

  • Six to ten years of relevant work experience ideally gained in an international law practice and/or renowned multinational, including experience in drafting, reviewing and negotiating various contracts or agreements, conducting legal review of complex issues and using legal analysis to provide solutions.

  • Excellent (written and spoken) knowledge of English, as well as Dutch and French with good communication and listening skills;

  • Commercial, pragmatic; proactive and business-oriented mindset. Experience managing stakeholder priorities and needs in a client facing capacity;

  • Dynamic, self-confident, and able to work on multiple projects at the same time with an ability to prioritize and demonstrate flexibility and agility in a fast-paced environment;

  • Experience in leading robust projects to successful completion on time and within budget;

  • Eager to learn and entrepreneurial with an internationally oriented and open minded spirit that values diversity. Ability to work both independently and within a team;

  • Willingness to (limited) travel if necessary.
