Summary:
The Sr. Principal Chief Engineer is responsible for partnering with leadership to deliver high impact outcomes within a mission function or technical specialty. The Sr. Principal Chief Engineer will drive the technical quality of the work program and lead the ongoing evolution of technical capabilities, experimentation capabilities, and exploration within the mission function or technical specialty.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Plans, develops, and oversees a portion of the Division’s sponsor strategic outcomes
Supports the Director by providing specific sponsor/program knowledge and expertise
In partnership with the Director, Department Managers and PLs, develops close working relationships with sponsor counterparts
In partnership with Director and Department Managers, develops and shapes a work program to achieve specific sponsor strategic outcomes

Accountable for strategic work‐shaping opportunities consistent with work program strategy
Collaborates with Divisions and Centers to leverage related activities, use of shared resources, and re‐use of existing products
Ensures the hiring, development, and shaping of the required skills, capabilities, and diversity of the department’s workforce through effective hiring, ongoing coaching and staff development, and monitoring of staff engagement
Effectively engages staff who fall short of expectations & initiates appropriate and timely actions to address poor performance
Ensures product technical quality for all work assigned to their department as identified in the work plan
Works with project leaders to ensure that all staff are appropriately assigned to projects and fully planned
Represents the needs and perspectives of staff to Division leadership
Advocates for Division competencies and establishes new work within the Division
Provide technical domain-specific knowledge, leadership, and influence internally and externally across multiple stakeholders to move the mission outcome forward.

Development of future MITRE leaders

Key Organizational Criteria:
Leads a department or function that has significant impact for sponsors, partners, and/or MITRE enterprise
Division or function provides multiple services or complex products/ solutions
Has multiple direct reports or leads a function
Basic Qualifications:
Requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 10 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 7 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
History of successful ML production operations including, but not limited to, industry-standard tools, scaling, ethics/fairness, governance, automation, testing, monitoring
Experience in one or more areas of computer science, such as Natural Language Processing/Understanding, Neural Networks, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Privacy, Trust & Safety, Software Engineering or similar
Proficiency with typical data science tools/technologies such as R, Python, Java, SQL, and Git
Familiarity with data architecture and data management concepts and strategies, such as the data lifecycle, data stewardship and governance
An interest in deeply understanding government sponsors’ business needs and challenges
Experience working with or leading multidisciplinary teams
History of participating in or managing robust research programs
Ability to tailor communications to provide the appropriate level of detail to the audience, whether technical or executive
Must have an IRS Moderate Suitability (US government clearance)
This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site
Preferred Qualifications:
Expert-level proficiency in at least one major programming language (C++, Java, Python) and one Deep Learning Framework (MXNet, Tensor Flow, etc.).
Familiarity with Big Data systems such as Hadoop, Spark, Hive, etc.
Familiarity with DevOps/MLOps concepts and tools (e.g., Autoscaling, containers, performance tuning and optimization) Familiarity with agile software development processes (e.g., scrum, user stories)
