About the Role:

In this role, you’ll apply your strategic and analytical skills supporting our Premium Products and Upmarket Card businesses. Joining Capital One’s Card Legal Team will introduce you to a Fortune 100 company through its largest and most prominent line of business, at the heart of Capital One’s innovation and technology journey. You’ll be a key player on the team advising on the marketing and development of premium brand products, benefits and features. You’ll partner with the business by strategizing about products, features and promotions, learning about and understanding the business intent, investigating and assessing the legal and business risks, and working to help our business match marketing promises to product execution. Working with the Card Legal team, you’ll also have the opportunity to learn and partner with the bright, collaborative and dynamic group of attorneys who support Card, as well as build working relationships across the Legal department. And you’ll work in a collaborative, supportive environment that values your insights, promotes continuous learning, and rewards creative thinking.

To succeed in this Manager, Counsel role, you’ll need strong legal and business analytical skills, and excellent attention to details and nuance. Written and oral communication skills also are key, as is the ability to organize and convey thoughts on legal risk with a focus on what matters in supporting business initiatives responsibly. It’s a plus if you have expertise with consumer financial regulatory laws, marketing and advertising laws, and/or general risk management. This position will report to a Director, Assistant General Counsel in Card Legal and will have responsibility for:

  • Identifying and assessing legal risks associated with Capital One’s Upmarket Card, with a particular focus on marketing and customer communications;

  • Translating the laws and legal requirements for the business teams and the business intent for the legal team and legal subject matter experts;

  • Ensuring project deliverables and timelines are met;

  • Actively engaging with colleagues to provide legal support as part of a collaborative and cross-functional team; and

  • Working with Card, Brand, the Card Business Risk Office, Corporate Communications, and Compliance stakeholders to address risks, develop creative solutions, and resolve issues.

This position will entail regular interactions with business partners, Legal Department subject matter experts, and other business attorneys in a fast-paced environment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school

  • Active member in good standing of at least one state bar

  • At least 2 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in-house legal department, or government agency

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in-house legal department, or government agency, ideally involving consumer regulatory or consumer finance experience, credit card or financial product programs or financial services

  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment and flexibility to adapt to changing needs

  • Ability to prioritize work and to manage multiple, simultaneous deadlines

  • Ability to build collegial and effective relationships with attorneys, business managers, creative teams, analysts, project managers, and corporate compliance professionals, and work cooperatively to resolve issues smoothly and quickly

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence others
