Department Summary:
As part of the Center for Integrated Transportation, the Proactive Safety Monitoring department (P234) monitors and identifies emerging risks in the aviation and surface transportation domains. Comprised of safety experts, software engineers, and data scientists, P234 leverages proprietary and public datasets to promote collaboration among a variety of stakeholders and drive the evolution of aviation safety.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Advance aviation safety by designing scalable software systems that enable mission impact; responsibilities include architecting sustainable data pipelines from proprietary and public sources, developing advanced safety analytics, and creating tools that enable analysts to identify emerging transportation risks
Lead teams to design cloud-based applications to support mission-focused use cases
Provide technical guidance around best practices to write code that works in local and cloud environments
Gather requirements from stakeholders, subject matter experts, and engineers to develop interactive visualization capabilities that support specific use cases and larger data exploration activities for non-technical audiences
Minimum Qualifications:
Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Analytics, or a similar degree
Ability to obtain and maintain FAA Suitability
Experience using software languages such as Java, JavaScript, Python, and R
Experience using common web development frameworks such as Vue and Angular
Experience using AWS tools
Applied experience with software version control, continuous integration and delivery, and Agile and DevOps methodologies and tools.
Comfortable learning new languages and ideas, embracing continuous, on-the-job learning
Creative problem solvers and risk takers
Ability to collaborate effectively with teammates, technical partners, and stakeholders
Self-starter capable of working in a dynamic environment
Demonstrated ability to complete tasks, drive projects to closure, and assimilate and correlate project information in a fast-paced environment
Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to reach out to technical experts
This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Analytics, or a similar degree
Strong knowledge of aviation operations and safety management
Experience with distributed data systems and cloud platforms (Hadoop, AWS, Spark, Kafka, etc.)
Familiarity with web technologies and frameworks such as Typescript, JSON, React, and Vue
Familiarity with data science, analysis, modeling, and visualization using Python, R, and/or Clojure
Familiarity with Machine Learning application and delivery
Experience using software management tools such as GitLab, Jira, Confluence, and Artifactory
Demonstrated ability to learn and apply knowledge of a technical domain to software development, particularly in aviation safety
Understanding of database query planning and optimization
