The Hazard Identification Department (P233) is seeking a Group Leader to join our leadership team located at MITRE in McLean, VA. P233, a member of the Transportation Safety Division, is seeking to advance the United States and the world to the next level of transportation safety, focusing on developing and applying analytic capabilities and techniques, including artificial intelligence and modeling and simulation, to generate in-time safety intelligence and actionable mitigations.

Roles & Responsibilities:

The Group Leader will participate on the cross-division management team responsible for shaping, leading, planning and executing the work program. Collaborating with the department manager, chief engineer, outcome leader(s) and other group leaders, the responsibilities include hiring, career development, and management of group staff; identifying, shaping, and facilitating the growth of future, impactful work opportunities that advance the science of transportation safety; and delivery of high-quality technical work products that enable the accomplishment of appropriate strategic sponsor and outcomes.

The successful candidate is effective at communicating with various management levels within MITRE, with MITRE sponsors and industry, and with potential sponsoring organizations, recognizing and following through on opportunities to leverage MITRE’s capabilities and expertise to advance the science of safety.

Responsibilities:

  • Work in partnership with the Department Manager (DM) and take active leadership in shaping and growing both the Department’s talent and capabilities for delivery, as well as its business development activities; collaborate with other leaders across the organization and externally; serve as an engaged talent-cultivator.

  • Serve as a direct supervisor for a group of 7-10 staff providing expert guidance and direction as a leader and partner to aid in appropriate staff project/assignment alignment; identify appropriate work opportunities; conduct regular performance and development conversations; prepare performance assessments and development plans; mentor and advocate for staff; provide recognition and facilitate routine home management actions. Actively promote the ability for staff to take charge of their career, articulate their impactful contributions to the organization, and be engaged in advancing the organization.

  • Serve as a direct supervisor for staff with expertise in data science, data analytics, aviation systems engineering, aviation safety metrics, visualization, machine learning, modeling and simulation, and Public Private Partnerships.

  • Communicate on a regular basis with work leaders on group member performance in order to provide constructive feedback and support career development. Leverage these work leader relationships to match staff competencies with projects and identify stretch assignments to develop new skills.

  • Partner and actively lead in shaping the department’s role in and its delivery on both the Transportation Safety Division and CIT Mission Impact Focus Areas; contribute to department, division, center, and/or corporate initiatives; support staff in understanding and navigating administrative procedures and their department, division, center, and corporate mission and strategy; communicate relevant information to staff.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • Demonstrated experience leading people and projects and are motivated and rewarded by the success and development of others.

  • Substantial technical background with ability to apply new innovations across a range of technical domains applicable to the group.

  • Demonstrated experience developing small business unit strategies and partnering across organizational boundaries to achieve mutual strategic objectives.

  • Demonstrated ability to build, retain, and grow high performance staff and manage teams in potentially disparate locations.

  • Significant exposure to and experience solving mission-oriented challenges of our sponsors.

  • Proven ability to recruit and develop a top-quality team with a commitment to enhancing Inclusion and Diversity.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply and mentor MITRE behaviors: taking risks, being adaptable, graceful and respectful, and fast responsiveness, especially to high priority needs.

  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site presence.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Substantial technical background with experience leading people and projects requiring the following competencies: data analysis, data science, modeling and simulation, aviation systems engineering, risk assessment, visualization, general aviation, aviation safety metrics, surface transportation (including vehicle and transit), machine learning, data fusion of sensitive proprietary data, and collaborative research environments.
