Scope of Job

To assist assigned surgeons in an outpatient site with minor/routine surgical procedures and other supportive duties. Assists in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons and registered nurses to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring a safe operating room environment, proper functioning of equipment and the operative procedures are conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Responsible for ensuring the necessary materials are available to support the facility’s procedures while minimizing costs and managing inventory levels effectively.

Description of Duties

• Sets up operating/procedure room prior to surgical procedure/procedures. Maintains sterile field and protects the sterility of the procedures.

• Sterilizes instruments after proper cleaning, prepares gowns, surfaces and other supplies. Cleans procedure room after surgical procedures and prepares room for next procedure. Cleans and prepares surgical instruments for terminal sterilization. Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.

• Stocks supplies. Orders supplies and ensures inventory is up to date and no expiration of supplies or instrument sterilization.

• Checks surgical machines and equipment. Monitors preventive maintenance on surgical equipment and alerts manager if regular preventive maintenance or repair is needed.

• Prepares patient properly for scheduled surgical procedure. Ensures that proper patient consent has been obtained.

• May transport/escort patient to and from procedure room.

• Passing instruments and other supplies to surgeon during surgical procedures/procedure. Providing other assistance as surgeon may need or procedure requires, such as assistance with suturing, postoperative dressings, handling tissue, properly preparing specimen for pathology evaluation, and/or cutting stitches.

• Monitors patient vital signs prior, during and after procedure.

• Triages surgical patients prior and after surgical procedures. Schedules surgical procedures both inpatient and outpatient and instructs patients of needed personal surgical preparation. May obtain prior authorization and assist patient with knowledge of cost of procedure/payment plans etc.

• Monitor and manage inventory turnover rates and minimize excess and obsolete stock.

• Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers to ensure timely delivery and resolve any issues.

• Create and maintain individual surgeon’s preference cards.

• Receives, sorts, inspects, and delivers incoming material shipments within a stockroom, warehouse, receiving, or mail center.

• Inspect materials and ensure receipt as ordered.

• Review shipping documents, packing slips, delivery tickets, invoices, and department order forms to complete shipment inspections and maintain stockroom inventories.

• Coordinates the processing and sorting of materials for delivery to recipients or distribution points.

• Assist with shipments and order inquiries.

• Completes delivery of materials and orders, obtaining signatures as required; picks up outbound materials/shipments and process utilizing appropriate methods.

• Coordinates with material suppliers to correct discrepancies.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education

Completion of Surgical Technologist Program or completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technology or Technical/Trade school degree in a related field such as surgical assistant.

Licenses/Certifications

Certified Surgical Technician or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.

Basic Life Support ( BLS ) certification course accredited by the American Heart Association.

Required Experience

One (1) year of surgical technician experience either in an inpatient or outpatient setting. Knowledge of process of surgery and specific surgical procedures. Process and flow of a surgical procedure and sterility of the surgical field and site.

Preferred Experience

Experience as a first assist surgical technician. Prefer Bilingual (Spanish/English).

Equipment

Standard operating room equipment and surgical instruments. Use of standard office equipment.

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Clinical ambulatory/clinic patient care facility conditions, office environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment across the Rio Grande Valley.

Knowledge of surgical procedures, sterile field, set-up, take down, and proper cleaning & sterilization of surgical instrument, use of surgical specialty machines/equipment. Ability to communicate effectively, written and verbal. Tact, diplomacy, discretion, and confidentiality of medical information required in all matters. Possible exposure to combustible materials. Possible exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
