ITW Engineering Intern in Matteson, Illinois

The intern will have responsibility for supporting both the Innovation Engineering Team as well as the Operations Team for our Motion Business located in Frankfort, IL. This Internship is designed to give a student hands-on exposure to the day-to-day as well as assist with projects and research in both functions. Possible projects include Safety Initiatives, Productivity Improvements, Data Analysis.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following (other duties may be assigned):

Innovation:

  • Use contemporary tools and state of the art market research approaches to gather and analyze data, to quantify and justify divisional strategy, and create the business case for new products.

  • Performs benchmarking tests, competitive analyses and market research to identify, understand and demonstrate opportunities for the division.

  • Reviews/designs product into customer applications using ITW Tools (i.e.: gear trax, working models, time studies, and kinematics, etc.).

  • Reviews customer / ITW designs for tooling and product functional feasibility, where applicable. Presents results to customer.

  • Prepares new product cost breakdown with the support of operations.

  • Learns from Applications Managers and Engineer(s) to apply design, product and applications expertise, testing, etc.

  • Through applications support, seeks and identifies product improvement and evolution opportunities.

Operations:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize production processes ensuring product quality.

  • Review and assist with updating the production standard work instructions.

  • Assist with 5S implementation on the production floor

  • Maintain and improve the manufacturing environment to harmoniously respond to changing customer needs and demands through facilitating cell layout, processing plans and selecting equipment to simplify and focus manufacturing processes.

  • Coach and develop work teams which exhibit positive and proactive attitudes, personal accountability, and superior manufacturing quality as well as encouraging ownership of operations, products, and processes.

  • Active leadership role in Safety Committee and Employee Work Enhancement Program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Student pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Engineering Technology preferred.

  • Additional Business Administration Education, with a focus on sales and strategic marketing with be a plus.

  • Working knowledge of CAD (SolidWorks or CATIA)

  • Excellent organization and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word and Excel

  • Project Management experience preferred

  • Knowledge of the automotive industry

  • Understanding of plastic injection molding, tooling and assembly process

  • 80/20 mindset and understanding

  • Ability to convert customer specifications to value added solutions

  • Leadership skills

  • Self-starter

  • Strong Mechanical aptitude
