This is a skilled level class position. This position is to perform skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy trucks, earth moving equipment, and related construction equipment including road graders, gasoline and diesel-powered tractors, dump trucks, excavators, dozers, backhoes, sweeper trucks, skid loaders, and other City owned equipment. This position will have work assigned to them in oral, written, and electronic communications, but the employee is expected to determine the nature and extent of needed repairs on the equipment. This position will receive occasional instruction from the Fleet Manager or the Senior fleet mechanic. This position will report directly to the Fleet Manager.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The incumbent will actively perform a variety of skilled repair in the heavy equipment repair and servicing of City automobiles, trucks, construction equipment, and other equipment as directed by the Fleet Manager. This position will also assist all other Fleet Mechanics in daily operations as needed. May receive after hour calls for emergency break downs if deemed necessary by the Fleet Manager.

Perform all job duties adequately and properly; follow departmental policies and operating procedures. Show respect and courtesy in dealings with coworkers and the general public; behave in a manner the does not obstruct or hinder other employees from completing their duties; act in a matter that is safe and follow the Citys safety procedures at all times.

Fabricate, weld, and repair broken equipment.

Repairs and adjusts hydraulic pumps, safety valves, cylinders on all equipment.

May attend special training and familiarization of workshops dealing with innovations in heavy equipment operations, repairs, and maintenance.

Inspects, repairs and adjusts diesel power units, hydraulic systems, injection valves and systems, mold boards and other related items on heavy equipment.

Diagnose defects in all City Equipment.

Understand and carry out oral, written, and electronic instructions.

Ability to create, complete and accurately fill out required work orders and maintain accuracy with special details to parts used and hours to complete.

Observe or monitor objects to determine compliance and overall safe operation of City fleet.

Read, understand and apply information from charts, graphs, and repair manuals.

Must be able to tear down, rebuild, install various engines and transmissions and other mechanical items on City fleet.

Ability to transport, test drive, and operate all City fleet.

Inspect, dismount, patch, change, replace, rotate, mount, and balance tires and tubes on all classes of City Vehicles; Determines excessive or improper wear of tires inspected and serviced.

Move heavy objects with forklift, dolly, pallet jack, etc.

Operate City vehicles and City equipment

Use power tools, hand tools, and other items needed to perform job duties.

Operate a variety of vehicle lifts, jacks, and other large items to repair vehicles.

Physically present to perform the duties of the position.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum and Preferred Entrance Qualifications

Education and Experience

Three (3) years experience in Heavy duty truck and equipment repair as well as auto repair.

Must possess a Valid Arizona State Drivers License.

Possession of a master set of tools and box combo to perform all duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

ASE certification in Heavy Duty Trucks and Automotiv ASE certifications are preferred.

EVT certifications is highly desirable.

Formal Training of heavy equipment with certificates will also substitute in leu of ASE certifications.

Competencies for Successful Performance of Job Duties

Knowledge of:

Operating computers, calculators, and other office machinery.

Electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.

Operation of internal combustion engines, powertrains, automatic transmissions, hydraulic, and electrical systems.

Methods of testing, procedures, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of motorized equipment.

Skill in:

Communicating effectively with coworkers and the public.

Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up assignments with a minimum of direction.

Ability to:

Work independently and as a team.

Read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.

Lift heavy objects (up to 75 lbs.).

Climb stairways, ladders, and work on elevated surfaces.

Work in a stationary position for considerable amounts of time (standing, kneeling, sitting).
