Agricultural Research Service Student Trainee (Biological Science) in Manhattan, Kansas
Summary This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Plains Area (PA), at the Center for Grain and Animal Health Research Unit in Manhattan, KS. In this position, you will assist in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment. Responsibilities Prepares routine media, and solutions, by weighing and measuring constituents according to established methods. Performs simple repetitive tasks incidental to the research project. Uses common laboratory equipment and apparatus such as autoclaves, sterilizers, centrifuges and homogenizers. Performs such duties as servicing and cleaning insect traps, keeping simple records of work accomplished, etc. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. PATHWAYS ELIGIBILITY All applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a student on at least a half-time schedule at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program. GS-02 Education: Completion of high school or GED diploma. Physical Demands Typically, the incumbent performs the work in a laboratory, field, and/or greenhouse setting. Work conditions may range from sedentary to primarily physical. Work requires occasional walking, standing, bending, and carrying items ranging from lightweight (in laboratory conditions) to moderately heavyweight (in field conditions). Work Environment The work is performed in a laboratory, which involves everyday risks, or discomforts which requires normal safety precautions. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Applicants will be assessed/evaluated through application of the agency developed qualification standard for internship positions, which is based solely on level of education. Education Additional Information Student Interns must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of the appointment. Incumbents will be required to provide proof of continued enrollment and good standing (GPA of 2.0 or equivalent) each semester or grading period throughout the internship program. Failure to do so will result in termination of the appointment. Upon completion of all program requirements, Pathways Interns may be converted to a term, career-conditional or career appointment within 120 days following successful completion of all their education; however, conversion is not guaranteed. The full performance level (FPL) of the position to which converted may be up to the GS-02 level. This position may be eligible to telework up to four days per week, based upon the duties of the position. This position may also be eligible for flexible work arrangements as determined by agency policy and any applicable collective bargaining agreements.
