r*About This Role*

The Agronomy Department at Kansas State University seeks an Assistant/Associate Professor to lead an innovative research and teaching program in Range Management to enhance the profitability, sustainability, resilience, and ecosystem services of managed grasslands. The candidate will be the Associate Director of the Hilas Bay and Emma Browning Rannells Flint Hills Prairie Preserve located just south of Manhattan, KS. The broad research focus of this position is to develop and refine rangeland management practices that achieve ecological and economic goals by supporting multiple land uses and ecosystem services and sustaining rangeland health and climate resiliency. The candidate is expected to conduct innovative research and incorporate new and emerging technology as appropriate. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses on range management and range ecology and a graduate-level course which equates to one course per semester. Advising undergraduate students in the range program is expected. The successful individual will develop a program with breadth designed to advance rangeland ecology and management, serve the needs of Kansas ranchers and range stewards, and collaborate broadly with other faculty in rangeland, agronomic, animal, economic, and ecological disciplines.

The Rannells property consists of nearly 3,000 acres of native tallgrass prairie divided into 25 grazing units for replicated grazing research. It is used for a wide variety of rangeland research projects with an emphasis on stocker cattle production. Kansas has over 14.6 million acres of perennial grasslands- or 40 % of the land area. Kansas rangelands are integral to the state\'s thriving livestock industry.

A large and diverse community of scientists in related fields, including those associated with the Konza Prairie Biological Station, Animal Science and Industry, and Veterinary Medicine, provides opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration. Cooperation and coordination with numerous rangeland-focused organizations and agencies to achieve common goals are also expected. The candidate is expected to develop an externally funded research program, including training graduate and undergraduate students and disseminating results. The candidate must be able to work in a multicultural setting and create an environment that fosters collegiality, diversity, and teamwork.
