POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for de-contamination, processing, assembling and sterilizing instruments and equipment. Responsible for the disinfection and restocking of Isolation, Emergency Carts and other patient care equipment. Works within the guidelines for infection control, JCAHO, OSHA and AAMI to assure sterility of supplies, to provide and maintain necessary levels. Provides leadership and expertise to staff members in the absence of Management. Communicates efficiently with staff. Reports to Sterile Processing Manager. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.

  • Certification in Sterile Processing through a nationally accredited central service organization such as the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or Healthcare & Sterile Processing Association (IAHCSMM) is required. (CRCST or CBSPD accepted.)

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, maintain a driving record free of any violations and pass a safe driving educational program upon hire and annually thereafter in order to participate in the Fleet Vehicle Program as outlined in the Eastern Connecticut Health Network’s Environment of Care Safety Policies and Procedures #110.

    EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 2 years experience as a Sterile Processing Technician I.

    COMPETENCIES:

  • On an on-going basis the incumbent must obtain the mandatory number of continued educational units (CEU’s) needed to maintain the currency of certification.

  • Requires advanced and demonstrated knowledge and understanding of sterile processing principles.

  • Requires good problem-solving techniques.

  • Personal computer skill and experience is desirable but not required.

  • Must be able to read, write and speak clearly using the English language.

  • Delivers and documents shift report to all appropriate shift members. Communicates effectively with department supervisor as needed.

  • Demonstrates appropriate supervisory skills in absence of Management. Contacts appropriate departments as necessary and communicates effectively with both OR’s, Biomed and vendors as needed.

  • Assists with continuing education and growth within department. Schedules and documents knowledge assessments. Develops and conducts in-services based on needs identified.

  • Unloads the soil lift and prepares soiled instrumentation for transport to the Off-Site Sterile Processing Center.

  • Accurately inspects, assembles and packages items for sterilization. Handles and inspects all instruments/scopes to prevent damage.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of all aspects of the sterilization process. Demonstrates the ability to trouble shoot department equipment.

  • Drives the delivery vehicle as needed for deliveries or pick-ups at both hospitals.

  • Correctly scans and distributes sterile, non-sterile items/supplies. Demonstrates knowledge of instrument tracking system and is able to assist staff with the system.

  • Prepares case carts with supplies utilizing preference/pick lists.

  • Participates in the orientation of new staff. Follows training plan and documents.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of safety requirements of all equipment and responds appropriately to potential safety concerns.

  • Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function in stressful situations. Utilizes critical thinking skills and sound judgment in priority setting and delegations.
