Our employees work on the world s most advanced electronics from detecting threats for F-35 pilots to illuminating the night for soldiers. Spanning air, land, sea, and space, we are developing the technology of tomorrow, delivered today. Drawing strength from our differences, we re innovating for the future. And you can, too.
Due to continued growth, BAE Systems has an opening for a Principal Electrical Board Design Engineer with Space experience in Manassas, VA. BAE Systems is one of the world's leading defense contractors and a stable Fortune 500 Company. This specific opening is within our Space Systems product line. The Manassas, VA site is the headquarters of the BAE Systems Space Systems product line and has a long heritage of premier Radiation Hardened processors dating back to the 90s servicing satellites as well as extraterrestrial missions including all of the Mars Rovers.
The position will be expected to perform all aspects of electrical and digital board design spanning from taking a requirements document and systems block/architecture diagram and designing a solution. The solution would entail component selection, PCB stackup, creating symbols and footprints, schematic capture, layout/placement, and routing. We have separate groups for Component Engineering and Gerber generation, but both are valuable skillsets that would be utilized if available. Our boards/systems include many different types of signals and interfaces such as ADC/DAC interfaces, I2C/SPI interfaces, clocks, DDR3/DDR4 memory, PCIe, JTAG, and high speed SERDES. For our box-level designs, we commonly use SpaceVPX standards for our backplanes and connectors. Experience with VITA/SpaceVPX standards is recommended, but not required. Our designs often have numerous cards talking together within a box. So experience designing backplanes and with cabling is helpful, but not required.
Our typical board applications are in the 100s of MHz frequency range with a few higher speed interfaces for DDR3/DDR4 memories or SERDES spanning into the 1-10Gbps range. We commonly use daughter cards either because we are running short on space or because we want to add flexibility for re-use in similar applications. Our designs may have multiple clocks. They often have FPGAs, processors, and other CGA components with packages with I/O counts as high as 1752 at 1mm spacing. The number of layers is typically in the 22-28 layer range to account for the high signal density.
In order to ensure our customers that our designs will work in their applications (typically satellites, but also missions to other planets or moons), we perform a fair amount of Worst Case Analysis. These types of analysis include Logic Compatibility, Power Dissipation, Power Sequencing, Tri-State Analysis, ESD, etc. As a board designer, you will feed input to these teams and may also help out with the analyses as well.
Our Board Designers work alongside our System Engineers, Component Engineers, WCA team, FPGA/RTL designers, and Mechanical Engineers to ensure we are building a reliable product and performing thorough design and analysis. This position will be in a team environment. As an experienced Board Design Engineer, you will have the opportunity to mentor junior engineers in a fast growing organization.
Our flexible work environment (including a 9/80 schedule) provides a work life balance that affords you the opportunity to change the world while maintaining your personal life. We put our customers first exemplified by our mission: We Protect Those Who Protect Us . This position is open to folks with various levels of experience and could be modified to entertain more or less experience as appropriate. The position will be in a hybrid style allowing for the candidate to work 2 days each week from home if desired.
Please note that pursuant to a government contract, the specific positions requires US citizenship status.
