Director, Industry & Community Relations

Iron Mountain is looking for a Director, Industry & Community Relations to support its Data Centers business unit. This person will report to the Chief Of Staff & VP Administration, Data Centers

Iron Mountain Data Centers (IMDC) and will be principally responsible for developing and executing IMDC’s global industry and community relations program; monitoring laws and regulations regarding impacting data centers; and advising IMDC senior leaders globally.

The newly created Director, Industry & Community Relations position will be responsible for creating IMDC’s global industry and community relations program. As we grow and evolve to meet the needs of our customers, we need someone to stay up-to-date on relevant industry and policy updates.

This opportunity to advise senior IMDC leaders globally allows the individual to partner cross-functionally to monitor laws and regulations in key jurisdictions and develop a public affairs strategy. We are seeking a candidate who has experience leveraging community and industry organizations and partnering with internal government affairs functions to execute a comprehensive community, public and government relations strategy.

To align with our broad corporate responsibility strategy and governance, this person would help us be better corporate citizens and bring a better understanding of legislation that impacts the data center industry. They will represent IMDC to ensure that we are appropriately planning for and implementing global laws and regulations. With so much possibility in the data center space, we need to stay on top of industry trends and public policy, and this role will play an integral role in that success.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and oversee IMDC’s Industry & Community Relations program including managing relationships with trade associations, government officials and other stakeholders

  • Working with regional General Managers, represent IMDC and take leadership positions when appropriate with assigned industry groups including the Data Center Coalition, as well as local technology councils and chambers of commerce

  • Monitor and assess market developments including law and regulations regarding data privacy/localization, tax incentives, energy and other issues as they emerge

  • Partner with the Communications, Corporate Social Responsibility, Government Affairs and Investor Relations teams to influence laws and regulations in key jurisdictions and develop a public affairs strategy as needed

  • Manage external consultant engagements related to the foregoing, including management of budgets and performance.

Key Skills, Requirements and Competencies:

  • Juris Doctor, MBA, or graduate degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, Government Affairs or Communications preferred .

  • 10 to 15 years of experience in advocacy or political communications; work in the trade associations and private sector or large organizations a plus.

  • Must be willing to travel to relevant IMDC locations globally; expected 25% to 50% of time.

  • Must have extensive knowledge of data center operations, laws and regulations impacting data centers, and experience working with large, publicly traded companies on business growth initiatives.

  • Develop and execute IMDC’s industry and community relations strategy, including representing IMDC before relevant stakeholders, staffing senior executives on engagement with stakeholders, and participating in and, sometimes leading, cross-functional teams in the development of action plans.

  • Make judgments in situations that are complex and provide in-depth analysis, strategic thinking, and innovative solutions.

  • Manage and leverage memberships and relationships with external organizations such as trade associations, local chambers of commerce and technology councils.

  • Have a strong interest in learning and growth in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of IMDC global operations.

  • Must be agile and willing to roll up sleeves and do whatever is required in a lean model “start-up” environment as the IMDC team and its responsibilities grow.

  • Very strong oral and written communication and relationship building skills needed to effectively partner with internal and external stakeholders. Writing sample required.

  • Candidates located in N. VA, Washington D.C. or Boston, MA strongly preferred.
