BELL LABORATORIES INC Chemical Facility Maintenance Technician in MADISON, Wisconsin

JOB REQUIREMENTS: Work schedule: 7:00am - 3:00pm, Monday - Friday RESPONSIBILITIES AND JOB ACTIVITIES: 1. Perform standard maintenance on equipment used for plant scale chemical synthesis (e.g., 2000 L glass-lined reactors, vacuum pumps, drying ovens, glass condensers, and filter dryers. 2. Perform repairs and manage specialized contractors to perform needed repairs. 3. Working with the Engineering and Chemistry teams, execute preventive maintenance and service to equipment used to support the manufacture of APIs. 4. Examples of equipment responsibilities: a. Glass-Lined Reactors i. Inspection and measurement of glass integrity for thickness and imperfections ii. Inspection and change out of gaskets and seals. iii. Calibration of temperature probes and pressure gauges iv. Repair and inspection of drain valves b. Acid Gas Scrubber i. Calibration of pH meter and controller ii. Inspection and change out of column packing media. iii. Inspection and change out of caustic soda reservoir. iv. Monthly coordination with operators to replace scrubber water. c. Heat Exchangers for Reactors i. Check, maintain appropriate levels and change oil as needed. ii. Inspect and replace heat exchanger for hard water buildup. iii. Coordinate cleaning of water side of the heat exchanger d. Filtration System i. Check, maintain appropriate levels and change oil on vacuum pumps. ii. Change oil filters on vacuum pumps. iii. Inspect integrity of piping and change parts as needed. e. Friction Aire Drying Ovens i. Calibrate thermocouples. ii. Inspect and change gaskets as needed. f. Floor Balances i. Calibrate on a scheduled basis. ii. Level or adjust support carts. g. Material Transfer Pumps i. Inspection and changeout of gaskets ii. Level or adjust support carts. iii. Rebuild as needed. h. Freezer System i. Filter changeout ii. Calibration of temperature readout i. Nitrogen Generator i. Testing proper flow to reactors ii. Change Filters iii. Coordinate annual PM. j. Water Supply i. Inspection of safety shower and eye wash station ii. Coordinate inspection of sprinkler system iii. Inspection and repair of plumbing supplying water to cooling towers. k. Mobile Fume Hood i. Changeout of HEPA filter ii. Filter testing iii. Flow velocity check l. Concentrate Mix Tanks i. Inspection of agitator motors ii. Inspection of drain valves iii. Vent inspection m. Agitated Filter Dryer Systems (Nutsche) i. Inspection and routine preventative maintenance ii. Ensure proper mechanical operation. n. Monthly Tank Inspections i. Level Switch Tests ii. Vent Inspection o. Annual Relief Vent Change outs i. Hot Oil ii. Boilers iii. Misc. p. Boiler PM\'s i. Annual Boiler PMs ii. Daily Water testing and Chemical Addition iii. Monthly third-party water treatment testing coordination iv. Steam Trap Surveys/Inspection/Replacement q. Ultrasonic Leak testing PM i. Conduct survey of process areas to locate leaks of Air/N2 and other gases. r. Oil Heaters/Coolers i. Monthly PMs ii. Annual Oil Testing and Analysis s. HVAC system Maintenance i. Filter Change outs ii. Exhaust fan bearing greasing. iii. Belt Tension and replacement PM t. RO system maintenance i. Water Softener PMs ii. Water Testing Checks 1. Conductivity iii. Membrane Replacement u. Grounding bonding PM i. Checking resistance for all grounding locations. v. Monthly Greasing PM 5. Completion of United States EPA RCRA Hazwoper Training. 6. Help facilitate accurate inventory of spare parts and records of PMs. 7. Available to be on call as needed. Overtime may be required to meet production demands. 8. Other related duties as required. ***** OTHER EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: 3+ years of previous maintenance of glass-lined chemical reactors within a chemical manufacturing environment. Demonstrated success working within and performing maintenance on equipment that manufactures highly toxic API substances and within reactor rooms that routinely employ highly flammable, combustible liquids. Must have hands-on experience and knowledge of safety measures required for operating within chemical synthesis spaces. Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical schematics are required. Logical trouble shooting and excellent verbal communication skills are required. Teamwork, flexibility, patience, diplomacy and a high level of initiative are necessary. Hand and power tools, spark tester, welding equipment, forklift, electrical test devices, and computers. Full-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) when required. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently/100 pounds occasionally is required.
