U W-MADISON DIV. CONTINUING STUDIES Assistant Professor of Adaptive Dairy in MADISON, Wisconsin

JOB REQUIREMENTS: Job Summary: As the world population grows, proactive and innovative strategies to efficiently produce high quality animal protein in a sustainable way are essential. Sustainability is a tripartite challenge that includes key environmental, economic, and social considerations. Adaptability and resilience to environmental challenges, such as rising temperatures, water shortages, weather extremes, and strained ecosystems will be critical in feeding a growing global population while confronting climate change. Adaptability and resilience to management challenges, such as shortages of skilled labor, disruptions in supply chains, changes in consumer preferences, and revisions to regulatory policies, will also be important in the coming decades. To help address these issues, the Dairy Innovation Hub seeks to fund a full time 9-month tenure-track faculty position to build an internationally recognized and extramurally funded research program that focuses on adaptive dairy cattle nutrition and an impactful teaching program. \"Adaptive\" refers to the ability of dairy calves, heifers, and cows to achieve and maintain optimal health and performance in the face of these and other unforeseen external challenges and in ways that are sustainable and efficient. The field of animal nutrition is evolving rapidly, in terms of the forages, concentrates, and alternative feedstuffs that can be used to produce milk and meat efficiently under varying environmental conditions and constraints, and in terms of our understanding of the interactions of nutrition with immunology, metabolic health, reproduction, longevity, behavior, and welfare. These factors contribute to maintaining the dairy industry\'s social license to operate by enhancing animal health and welfare while capitalizing on the ability of ruminants to consume and convert non-human-edible plants, industry byproducts, and food waste, into nourishing proteins to feed the human population. Consideration of the animal\'s entire lifespan, from fetal programming through calf rearing, heifer management, and mature cow health and performance, will be critical in addressing adaptability and resilience in a holistic manner.
