Oversees the district safety program in accordance with the Occupational Safety Division Manual. Works to create an active interest in accident prevention and the safety program. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives.Essential Duties: Administers the hazardous substance spill contingency plan and emergency planning programMaintains a comprehensive written hazard communication program for the district; develops local policies, procedures,guidelines and rule interpretations to comply with federal, state and local rules and regulations.Administers the new employee driver's orientation program and the vehicle safety programAdministers the violence prevention program.Assists or serves as the Substance Control OfficerCoordinates and schedules employee safety awards and the annual Safety Awards Banquet/Truck RoadeoDevelops localized policies, procedures, guidelines and rule interpretations to comply with federal, state and localrules and regulations.Monitors district's underground fuel storage tanks for compliance and assists with disposal of hazardous materialwastes.Processes damage property claims and/or assists with tort claims and open records requestsReviews and evaluates work orders for hazardous materials related consultant work; assists with and coordinates disposalof hazardous material wastes; inventories work areas for hazardous materials and general housekeeping.Coordinates safety meetings; usually involves planning, conducting, coordinating schedules and providing literature andaudio-visual material.Inspects equipment and work areas.Investigates employee accidents, prepares reports and maintains records; identifies injury types and accident causes,recommends preventative actions and conducts follow-up investigations.Investigates highway fatalities in the district and monitors excessive accident locationsMonitors workers' compensation records.Plans, schedules and administers training on safety issues including defensive driving, CPR, first-aid, fleet safety andhazardous materials; maintains training records.Plans, schedules and monitors programs or activities that promote employee safety and accident preventionProvides safety information for bulletin boards and employeesPerforms other job responsibilities as assigned.
