DEFINITION:

Provides nursing assistance to physicians in a community heath or hospital clinic or a Probation Department dispensary or infirmary.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:

Clinic Licensed Vocational Nurse I

Positions allocable to this class are responsible for providing nursing assistance in a community health or hospital clinic to physicians conducting diagnostic physical examinations and performing medical treatments by readying patients and examining rooms, making vital sign observations, administering ordered medications and treatments, and reinforcing the physicians' instructions to the patients.

Licensed Vocational Nurse I

Positions allocable to this class provide specified direct care to assigned adult or pediatric inpatients in a medical, surgical, obstetrical, psychiatric, admitting or rehabilitation ward, or intensive care, or other specialized inpatient care unit.

Essential Job Functions

Clinic Licensed Vocational Nurse I

  • Reviews patients' records to determine the purpose of the visit and whether or not patients' chart, x-rays or lab test results are ready or must be located for the physician.

  • Sets up the area to be used by the physician by obtaining and arranging the required supplies, equipment and instruments and the patients' charts, x-ray, and lab test results.

  • Observe patients to determine condition and need for immediate referral to physician.

  • Prepares the patient for examination and for treatment by the physician by transferring, positioning and draping the patient and cleansing areas of the patients' body, and hands instruments to the physician during treatments and procedures.

  • In accordance with the physicians' orders, administers medications and immunizations orally and by intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.

Licensed Vocational Nurse I

  • Administers medications by injection, orally, and other pre-determined methods with the exception of research drugs as determined by the Medical Department.

  • Checks prescribed dosages against specified limits.

  • Observes and reports adverse reaction to medication.

  • Recognizes the need for emergency care; initiates life-saving action in emergencies and alerts the nurse-in-charge or physician.

  • Sets up, operates and monitors electronic and/or mechanical equipment such as croupettes, oxygen therapy and suctioning equipment.

  • Measures and records vital signs; records bed care procedures, treatments, indications and nourishment provided and output.

To compete in this examination process, applicants must have a license to practice as a Vocational Nurse issued by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians -OR- have a license to practice as a Vocational Nurse issued by a State Government Board of Vocational Nursing, within the United States of America.

Applicants who have a license to practice as a Vocational Nurse issued by a State Government Board of Vocational Nursing, within the United States, may compete in this examination; however, the names of such candidates will be withheld from the certification list pending receipt of the required license authorized by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians.

Please ensure the License and Certification Section of the application is completed. Provide the title(s) of your required license(s), the number(s), date(s) of issue, date(s) of expiration and the name(s) of the issuing agency for the required license as specified in the Selection Requirements.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:

This exam will consist of an online un-proctored Work Styles Assessment (WSA) written test weighted 100%, covering the following areas: professional potential, achievement, working relationships, analyzing information, learning quickly, generating new ideas, using time efficiently, working to high quality standards, adapting to change, coping with uncertainty, willingness to learn, responsibility, deductive reasoning.

Applicants will receive instructions via email on when and how to log on and take the online un-proctored written test.

WRITTEN TESTS ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

Candidates must meet the Selection Requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the qualifying written test in order to be placed on the Eligible Register.

Benefit Information: Depending on the position, the successful candidate will enroll in a contributory defined benefit pension plan if the candidate is a “new member” of the County’s defined benefit plan (LACERA) on or after January 1, 2013 (first employed by the County on or after December 1, 2012) – unless she or he established reciprocity with another public retirement system in which she or he was a member before January 1, 2013. It should be noted that County employees do not pay into Social Security, but do pay the Medical Hospital Insurance Tax portion of Social Security at a rate of 1.45%. The Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association (LACERA) has reciprocal agreements with several public retirement systems in California.
