Position Overview:

The University of Southern California (USC) seeks a highly experienced, innovative, and strategic leader for the role ofAssociate Vice President, Health Sciences Advancement Operations(AVP). Reporting directly to the Vice President for Health Sciences Advancement, the AVP will play a critical role in driving operational efficiency, data analysis, strategic communications, and comprehensive campaign strategies to support USC’s $3 Billion Campaign for Health and broader Health Sciences enterprise.

The AVP will be responsible for leading the development and execution of fundraising strategies, ensuring the achievement of campaign goals across USC’s Health Sciences schools and departments. This role requires collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, including faculty, researchers, administrators, and fundraisers. The AVP will also oversee data analysis, prospect research, and operational processes that support the university’s philanthropic efforts. The AVP will lead strategic initiatives, ensuring alignment with USC’s overarching goals, and will provide expert guidance on campaign strategies, data utilization, and operational improvements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the creation, execution, and optimization of comprehensive campaign strategies to support fundraising goals across USC’s Health Sciences schools and departments.

  • Oversee and evaluate data analysis, reporting, and prospect research to provide actionable insights for campaign strategies and decision-making.

  • Drive operational efficiency by developing and implementing best practices and processes that support the Health Sciences Advancement team, enhancing productivity and campaign effectiveness.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support and refine campaign communications, ensuring clear and effective outreach across all levels.

  • Serve as a lead strategist for individual, principal, corporate, and foundation development prospects, partnering with faculty, researchers, and administrators to maximize campaign gifts.

  • Partner with Advancement Information Services to optimize CRM/Salesforce capabilities, ensuring actionable insights through sophisticated data analysis dashboards.

  • Support the Vice President for Health Sciences Advancement in the strategic design, implementation, reporting, and accountability of USC’s $3 Billion Campaign for Health.

  • Assist in building a comprehensive business plan that integrates all Health Sciences Schools, the Dornsife College of Letters Arts and Sciences, and the Viterbi School of Engineering into a cohesive health sciences fundraising entity.

  • Manage the advancement team in delivering consistent and impactful communications for fundraising campaigns, operations, and strategic initiatives.

  • Oversee campaign-related activities, including stewardship, creative writing, event planning, and teambuilding exercises that strengthen health sciences fundraising efforts.

  • Ensure the effective governance, utilization, and transformation of health system data for fundraising, ensuring data quality, accuracy, and security.

  • Collaborate with the office of sponsored research and the legal team to ensure the integration of private philanthropy and sponsored research in philanthropic agreements.

  • Provide guidance on operations and budget issues related to the overall development program and ensure fiscal responsibility and data integrity.

  • Participate in the planning and implementation of initiatives associated with the university and its participating units, ensuring measurable accountabilities and program effectiveness.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.

  • 10 years’ experience in higher education development or healthcare advancement.

  • Extensive experience in major gift fundraising, strategic planning, and operational management, preferably in a higher education or health sciences environment.

  • Proven leadership and team management experience, including developing and driving campaign success.

  • Strong data analysis and reporting skills, with the ability to translate complex information into actionable strategies.

  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments and build strong relationships with key stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 15 years’ experience within higher education or health sciences advancement.

  • Demonstrated expertise in campaign planning, communications strategy, and donor cultivation.

  • Experience developing comprehensive business plans that integrate multidisciplinary fields into impactful fundraising efforts.

The budgeted salary range for this position is $286,000 – $400,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
