Los Alamos National Laboratory Windows System Administrator (Computing Systems Professional 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Innovative Customer Experience (ICE) division is seeking an energetic and customer-focused Computing Systems Professional 2 / Computing Systems Professional 3, Windows System Administrator for the ICE Device Configuration Services (ICE-DCS) group. ICE-DCS consists of approximately 50 professionals, technicians, and students. The ICE division consists of more than 350 talented Solution Architects, Computer Systems Professionals, and Computer System Technician employees who provide the varied Laboratory organizations with Information Technology experts who design, build, and support their mission-driven technical needs, on the unclassified and classified networks through several different service touchpoints. In addition, optimize the use of information technology, ensure seamless delivery and operation of IT services by monitoring system performance, applying configuration management practices, creating processes and standards for selection and implementation.

This position will be filled at either the Computing Systems Professional 2 or Computing Systems Professional 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Computing Systems Professional 2 (CSP-2) ($83,900 - $136,600)

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing end-user and enterprise level computing, network, and technical support of a large-scale Windows environment on the unclassified and classified networks. Must be self-directed with the ability to adhere to guidelines and best practices. Job duties will include a full spectrum of Windows platform troubleshooting, designing, and administration including but not limited to:

Managing Windows systems at an institutional level utilizing Active Directory and Group Policy

Communicating technical information in a way that both technical and non-technical personnel can understand

Automate routine tasks

Collaborate with management, customers, and team members to mitigate vulnerabilities within the environment and provide advanced technical support to the user community

Research emerging technologies, new industry trends, hardware and software tools and solutions

Computing Systems Professional 3 (CSP-3) ($101,700 - $168,200)

In addition to the above, the successful candidate will perform the following, including but not limited to:

Demonstrated excellence in understanding security principles for infrastructure deployment and configuration

Implementing and managing projects to fulfill mission needs

Evaluate impact of hardening operating systems/network protocols, applications, and hardware

Recommend and implement Information Architecture processes and standards

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Job Requirements for Computing Systems Professional 2:

  • Wide ranging knowledge administering Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems

  • Knowledge of managing systems utilizing Active Directory and Group Policy

  • Experience researching, installing, and troubleshooting hardware and software

  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and experience with configuration management tools

  • Extensive customer service experience interacting with customers and peers in a professional and responsive manner to quickly resolve issues

Additional Job Requirements for the Computing Systems Professional 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Demonstrated excellence in understanding security principles for infrastructure deployment and configuration

  • Demonstrated experience solving complex compute issues

  • Evaluate impact of hardening operating systems/network protocols, applications, and hardware

  • Exceptional work ethic and time management

  • Extensive experience providing technical implementations and solutions in a heterogeneous computing environment

Education/Experience for Computing Systems Professional 2: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a related field and a minimum of four years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience Computing Systems Professional 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with vulnerability remediation including utilization of cyber-related tools for auditing, compliance verification, vulnerability testing, system patching and continuous monitoring

  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), Diskless Computing environments and Endpoint Management

  • Experience adhering and configuring systems for compliance standards using group policy

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 Year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
