Los Alamos National Laboratory Web Developer and Applications Engineer (Scientist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The High Performance Computing (HPC) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory provides scientific computing resources consisting of some of the largest HPC systems in the world as well as numerous large commodity cluster systems. Our HPC Support Services Web Team is seeking a highly qualified Web developer capable of both building custom web-based applications and running open-source tools, all in support of the HPC Division.

The selected candidate will stay up to date on support tools like Atlassian Confluence, Jira and other ticketing systems, be able to research and recommend new tools to support the Division. The selected candidate will also be skilled in web application development and authentication methods such as basic, certificate, LDAP, SAML, Kerberos, Oauth, AuthN, and AuthZ.

The primary responsibilities will include running the support tools for the HPC Division, including Atlassian Confluence, Ticketing system, LDAP servers and several custom-built web applications. As needed, the selected candidate will also develop, modify, and maintain custom web-based applications, so in depth knowledge of several programming languages is required including Python and Django. Also desirable is knowledge of PHP, Perl, and Ruby in support of legacy applications. The candidate will participate in on-call responsibilities in support of our infrastructure upkeep and solve day-to-day system issues as they arise. The position will involve setup and maintenance of several databases including MySQL and MongoDB. The candidate will work in a small team to develop custom solutions for the HPC Division and find ways to improve and modernize our infrastructure possibly using containers, CI/CD methods, microservices and cloud technologies.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Broad experience maintaining or developing web applications; including the full lifecycle from planning, developing, testing and maintenance.

  • Knowledge of containerization, and running containers in Kubernetes or Openshift.

  • Proficiency in one or more scripting languages like Bash, Perl, Ruby, Ruby-on-Rails, JavaScript, Python, etc.

  • Strong Knowledge of one or more programming languages like Python, PHP, Java, etc.

  • Knowledge of Website security hardening.

  • Experience using or configuring one or more directory services systems such as 389ds, OpenLDAP, Red Hat Directory Services/IDM, etc.

Education/Experience:

Position requires a Bachelor degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • High attention to detail including excellent organizational skills, analytical thinking, observational and problem-solving skills. Proven ability to independently multi-task and adjust to the workings of a dynamic and fast paced environment.

  • Knowledge of and experience with web-based authentication and authorization, securing web-based user interfaces, best practices, and knowledge of existing tools to help scan and secure websites.

  • Experience working in a large production computing environment.

  • Proficiency with Web Oriented Services and Frameworks (Apache, Django, etc).

  • Experience using and reporting from one or more production database systems, with knowledge of database administration and configuration.

  • Knowledge of WCAG and Section 508 compliance.

  • Experience running production Web or Linux services with regular patching, upgrade cycles. Experience troubleshooting issues on production services.

  • Experience configuring and leveraging CI/CD methods such as GitLab runners for the automation of unit tests, integration tests and application deployment.

  • Active DOE Q clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
