Los Alamos National Laboratory Mechanical Systems Design Engineering Technologist 2/3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The DARHT Experiments and Radiographic Science (J-4) group is seeking a Mechanical Systems Design Engineering Technologist to join their Radiography Team. J-4 conducts experimental design, radiographic optical train design, and diagnostic design for the Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test facility. Come join our team and make a difference!

The successful candidate will use 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce models, drawings, layouts, and engineering concepts. They will also generate complete design packages for complex components, assemblies, tooling, equipment and/or systems. Independently define modeling structure for large, complex design projects and resolve design package issues by facilitating design reviews, collaborating with engineers and stakeholders on hardware design, fabrication, assembly, and testing. The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of engineering concepts and advanced skills in product data management and/or configuration management of part and assembly definition.

They will have a working knowledge of industry standards such as ASME Y series design/drafting standards including Y14.5M Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) as related to design field. The successful candidate will perform complex calculations in support of unique technical problems for fit, form and function. They will work independently or as part of a team. May mentor lower-level designers in American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Y14.5 or Laboratory drafting manual and will perform complete system drawing checks.

Engineering Technologist 2 $92,300 - $151,000

  • Successful applicants will perform the following duties in this position: Provide support in the areas of design, manufacture, assembly, and testing.

  • Experience with Creo Parametric 3D CAD Software and PDMLink Product Lifecycle Management Software

  • Help determine proper processes for product development, including fabrication, material selection, machining methods/equipment selection, tooling/fixtures, inspection, and assembly techniques.

  • Perform computer-related activities, such as preparing input data and using computer programs for computerized solution of technical problems, support of control systems and use of CAD systems for drawing preparation.

  • Resolve straightforward mechanical engineering problems for hardware design, fixturing and tooling.

  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

  • Promote a strong collaborative work environment.

  • Component and tool design, fixturing, schematics, and tooling equipment.

  • Design for manufacturability and/or Machine shop experience with equipment such as mill, lathe, drill press, welder, and inspection equipment.

  • Definition of engineered systems incorporating engineered materials and components to meet acceptance criteria and realize fit, form, function, and manufacturability.

  • Experience with CREO parametric systems and associated Product Data Management systems (Windchill PDMLink).

  • Modeling and drawing drafting principals, application of standards, symbols, notes, GD&T on drawings and models to capture design intent.

  • Develop novel design solutions for unique and non-standard design challenges in either static or dynamic applications.

  • Develop mechanical and structural designs for various requirements and conditions.

Engineering Technologist 3 $101,700 - $168,200

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the successful applicant will:

  • Lead small project teams, providing technical leadership and oversight in planning and execution.

  • Extensive experience with Creo Parametric 3D CAD Software and Product Lifecycle Management Software (Windchill PDMLink).

  • Provide insight, expertise, and direction of manufacturing and assembly processes used in fabrication, including material selection, machining methods/equipment selection, tooling/fixtures, inspection, and assembly techniques.

  • Develop solutions to engineering problems in support of novel hardware design and/or testing.

  • Design of large, welded structures and assemblies.

  • Commissioning and assembly of designed mechanical and electro-mechanical systems.

  • Work with engineering staff to prepare and/or carry out changes in design, methods of manufacture/assembly, and drafting techniques/procedures in area of discipline; coordinate corrective actions.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Design and Manufacturing Experience

Demonstrated experience designing mechanical and electro-mechanical hardware and structures applying novel engineering concepts to mechanical design intent. Working knowledge of ASME, AWS, IEEE and related engineering, design, and manufacturing standards. Experience and knowledge of fabrication processes, equipment, hardware, and materials.

Communication and Teamwork

Demonstrated effective and efficient written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated record of developing constructive, cooperative working relationships and working with teams to meet deliverables.

Education/Experience at the Level 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at the Level 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated mechanical design, manufacturing, or assembly experience in the weapons program.

  • Familiarity with LANL standards, equipment, procedures, and operations.

  • Experience with and application of current national design and drafting codes and standards such as ASME Y14.5M, ASME 14.1 and ASME 14.24.

  • Extensive experience (10+ years) with CREO and Product Lifecycle Management Software (Windchill PDMLink).

  • Experience with SolidWorks CAD or similar software.

  • Optomechanical and optics design experience.

  • Fiber optic and photonics-related systems design and/or fielding experience.

  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis and conducting formal engineering calculations.

  • Experience with practices and procedures used in the Nuclear Security Enterprise for conveying design intent to other national laboratories and production plants.

  • Active DOE Q clearance
