Los Alamos National Laboratory HPC Storage System Researcher (Scientist 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The High Performance Computing Division's (HPC) mission is to provide production high performance computing systems to the Laboratory. Our work spans the early phases of development, acquisition, and production readiness of HPC platforms and continues to the maintenance and operation of these systems and facilities in which they are housed. Our portfolio also includes research and development of new technology and applications in high performance computing.

The High Performance Computing (HPC) Storage Team within the HPC Design Group (HPC-DES) delivers leading edge HPC storage research and helps deliver and maintain solutions to LANL's HPC production environment.

To support Los Alamos National Laboratory's scientific mission, it is necessary to provide storage system services that enable scientists to easily analyze and manage terabytes to petabytes of scientific data. The HPC Design Storage Team is tasked with researching, designing, building, and integrating the storage systems hardware and software that enable faster and more efficient insight into extreme-scale scientific data sets. As part of the storage design team, you will collaborate to design and implement the next generation of storage system services for Los Alamos National Laboratory's large-scale HPC and Machine Learning (ML) platforms. Tasks include the application of hardware-software co-design to build scalable storage systems, leverage computational storage to build efficient data services, and advance the frontiers of HPC storage to enable rapid insight into scientific data sets. What You Need

Minimum Job Requirement

  • Demonstrated experience as a leader and team player with good communication, interpersonal, written and organizational skills.

  • Experience collaborating with all levels of organizations (i.e., operations personnel and supervisors, engineering, management, and outside contractors and entities).

  • Advanced knowledge and development in C/C++.

  • Deep technical understanding of distributed systems design.

  • Familiarity with scientific simulation datasets, file-formats, and I/O strategies and an understanding of data analytics pushdown concepts.

  • Experience using and developing software leveraging common data analytics ecosystem (Hive, Spark, DuckDB, Parquet, Iceberg, Arrow, etc).

  • In-depth knowledge of file systems, especially parallel file systems, and their use in scientific simulation (Lustre, GPFS, pNFS, etc.).

  • Experience contributing to research projects from proposal to publication

  • Demonstrated experience presenting work to peers at conferences as well as technical exchanges with peers.

  • Substantial experience in identifying problem areas, investigating alternative solutions, and determining actions to be performed.

  • Ability to lead a lead and mentor junior staff as well as students

  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, design, plan, and lead projects independently.

Education/Experience:

Position requires a master's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Expertise with scientific simulation datasets, file-formats, and I/O strategies and an understanding of data analytics pushdown concepts.

  • Expertise in using and developing software leveraging common data analytics ecosystem (Hive, Spark, DuckDB, Parquet, Iceberg, Arrow, etc).

  • Proficient in contributing to research projects from proposal to publication and comfortable presenting work to peers at conferences and in technical exchanges.

Work Location:

This position will be in Los Alamos, NM, with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement (partially onsite, partially offsite) or local teleworking from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Hybrid and local teleworking options are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

No Clearance: This position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks
