Los Alamos National Laboratory Development & Fabrication Technician 1/2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Prototype Fabrication (PF) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory provides decades of experience and expertise in machining, fabrication and precision dimensional inspection of critical hardware needed to support the nation's stockpile stewardship efforts.

Join our team of engineers, machinists, inspectors, programmers, welders, fabricators, material specialists and maintenance technicians to learn about manufacturing! The selected Development and Fabrication Technician will work in the PF Production Group. This group provides maintenance logistical support for high precision components across a diverse collection of machine centers.

Our technicians provide support by performing a multitude of duties including routine maintenance on equipment, maintaining shop hygiene, managing materials, waste disposition and more.

This position will be filled at either the 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate.

Development & Fabrication Tech 1 ($39,200 - $60,200)

Development & Fabrication Tech 2 ($52,400 - $80,600)

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Machine Shop Support

  • Ability to perform routine preventative maintenance on machine tools such as coolant changes, checking oil, cleaning filters and wiping down machine tools.

  • Ability to provide forklift and crane support.

  • Ability to support the production control team to move materials.

  • Ability to assist the maintenance team in in preparing and coordinating equipment/machine tools for installation, removal, or disposition for salvage.

Waste Management Support

  • Ability to coordinate with the Shop Supervisors and Waste Management Coordinator to manage waste, including labeling and disposal.

Inventory Management

  • Ability to maintain inventory levels of raw stock material and consumables used in the manufacturing process.

  • Ability to order replacement raw stock material and consumables.

  • Ensure shops areas, stock room, and drop points remain clean and organized.

Team Dynamics

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse team of professional machine shop personnel, including the ability to leverage ingenuity, creativity, and personal independence to support multiple concurrent team tasks with changing programmatic priorities.

Education/Experience (Level 1):

Position requires a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of 1 year of related experience.

Education/Experience (Level 2):

Position requires a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of 3 years of related experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience as a forklift and/or crane operator.

  • Demonstrated entry-level ability to operate material handling equipment.

  • Organized and detail oriented; can prioritize, multi-task, and work in a fast-paced, environment.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in using a variety of hand tools and power tools.

  • Experience performing mechanical and electrical system maintenance operations related to set up, alignments, maintenance, operations, and/or calibration of conventional tools and/or equipment.

  • Ability to obtain qualifications to operate forklift and/or crane.

  • Ability to obtain hazardous material training and certification.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation):

  • Lifting 30+ pounds.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
