Los Alamos National Laboratory Deputy Warhead Manager (Project-Program Director 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The W78 Systems Engineering (W-3) group is looking for a Project-Program Director 4 (Deputy Warhead Manager) to support the W78 Warhead Manager and advance the program's mission. In this role, you will assist the Warhead Manager in overseeing War Reserve (WR) production, surveillance, Joint Test Assembly (JTA) production, anomaly investigations, and warhead sustainment efforts in support of the W78 annual assessment.

As Deputy Warhead Manager, you will address complex technical and programmatic challenges while providing essential engineering expertise and leadership. You will play a key role in creating a positive and collaborative work environment that fosters innovation, teamwork, and a commitment to excellence. Your leadership will extend to guiding the W78 team, steering program planning and development, managing long-term budgets, and aligning efforts with broader stockpile stewardship objectives.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Nuclear Weapon Systems:

  • Advanced knowledge of the Nuclear Weapons Program and the U.S. Stockpile.

  • Record of professionally recognized accomplishments and demonstrated expertise in a major element of the nuclear weapons program.

Leadership:

  • Demonstrated experience in technical leadership and program management, including success in program development, advocacy, strategic planning, resource management, technical execution, and negotiation.

  • Demonstrated commitment to Laboratory goals of operational leadership, ensuring the security of classified information, ensuring the health and safety of workers, the public, and the environment, as well as workforce diversity and employee development.

Teamwork:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a strong ability to foster teamwork and resolve conflicts.

  • Demonstrated successful teamwork and consensus building, consistent with appropriate delegation and recognition of others.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across program lines to achieve broader organizational and program objectives.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively engage and communicate with representatives from diverse organizations and across all levels of an organization.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Master of Science Degree in an engineering field.

  • Familiar with issues and challenges related to the W78 warhead.

  • An understanding of nuclear physics principles.

  • Demonstrated experience interacting with one or more nuclear security enterprise (NSE) Production Agency's.

  • Experience interacting with and presenting to upper-level management, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and US Air Force (or comparable) customers.

  • Experience working directly with NNSA and communicating budget requirements, scope requirements, milestone reporting, and program review processes and deliverables.

  • Knowledge of Air Force (or comparable) Project Officer's Group structure, subgroups and functions.

  • Derivative Classifier (DC) experience.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-chg1-pgchg) for additional information.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
