Los Alamos National Laboratory Computer and Information Security Specialist 1/2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

As a member of the Personnel Security group, you will serve a vital function for the Laboratory in the Access Control and Access Authorization Team. Many of the activities at the Laboratory involve working with classified information. Personnel Security is instrumental in assisting workers to obtain and maintain a security clearance to allow this access. Personnel Security is comprised of the Badge Office, Control of Classified Visits, Clearance Processing, and the Security Awareness

Personnel Security is one of the busiest groups at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Your attention to detail and ability to work well with other individuals, groups and independently will be a major part of obtaining success in this position.

You will use your skillset to help employees obtain physical and/or logical access and provide Security education by using various databases to complete the required steps. You will be part of a multi-team effort in a fast-paced environment where your attention to detail and ability to manage your time is essential. You will work with multiple customers each day via telephone, messenger/chat, e-mail, and in-person. You will be required to learn all applicable rules and regulations related to Personnel Security. You will validate requests, verify identity/citizenship, and review official documents to ensure only authorized individuals are granted access to the Laboratory. You will work with a 4th Dimension relational database application to track each submission by completing electronic checklists within the system. You will be required to learn all requirements applicable to granting access to classified information and you will protect personally identifiable information (PII). You will interact with new employees and visitors from around the world as they arrive and experience Los Alamos National Laboratory for the first time.

Personnel Security ensures that granting access to classified matter and/or special nuclear material does not endanger the common defense and security and is consistent with national interests. The staff in Personnel Security aim to provide quality service while ensuring Federal and Laboratory requirements are followed.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Adaptability:

Proven competence to provide professional customer service while under pressure of multiple deadlines, frequent interruptions, and changing priorities. Self-motivated team player who encourages and fosters cooperation, teamwork, attendance, punctuality, and progression.

Time Management:

Working knowledge and experience in effectively prioritizing assigned tasks and assuming responsibility for accomplishing the work.

Communication:

Working knowledge and ability to interact with all levels of personnel and management, and experience with high volumes of customers as both part of a team and independently. Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Attention to Detail:

A strong attention to detail where high levels of accuracy are mandatory. Experience coordinating schedules and calendar management to ensure strict deadlines are met.

Education/Experience: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 2 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Laboratory Mission:

Working knowledge of the Laboratory mission, organizations, programs, scientific capabilities, policies, and procedures.

Security Knowledge:

Working knowledge of federal, state and local security and safeguards standards and regulations.

Information Technology:

Previous experience using call-center technology, incoming ticketing systems, and relational databases.

Information Security:

Working knowledge and experience in protecting sensitive and personally identifiable information.

Clearance:

Active Q clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
