Los Alamos National Laboratory Computational Mechanics Code Developer (R&D Engineer 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

R&D Engineer 2 ($101,700 - $168,200)

MST-8 is seeking an R&D Engineer 2 to lead the development and support of a suite of computational mechanics tools. The successful candidate will join the MST-8 group and be a member of the Materials Science in Radiation and Dynamics Extremes Modeling (REDM) team. The models to be supported allow for the study of the mechanical response and microstructure evolution of metals and metallic components subjected to extreme environments (mechanical loads, thermal loads, and irradiation). The REDM team focuses on multi-scale modeling and analysis of steels and advanced metals. Thus, the numerical tools to be supported range from discrete dislocation dynamics simulations codes, cluster dynamics codes, crystal plasticity-based polycrystal modeling tools and finite element simulation methods.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of metals deformation behavior.

  • Documented record of technical achievement in a relevant engineering discipline, such as mechanical engineering.

  • Strong knowledge of finite element method/analysis.

  • Strong knowledge of constitutive modeling such as crystal plasticity formalisms methods.

  • Experience in algorithm development (e.g., using Fast Fourier Transform based methods).

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, particularly in technical reports and presentations.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Ph.D. in Materials Science, Engineering, Physics, or related discipline and typically post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab, or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
