Job Description

We are seeking a 2nd shift (3pm-11:30pm) machinist for a large aerospace company in Los Alamitos, CA. The ideal candidate will have tool making experience, specifically with conventional/manual lathe machines. This union position offers a starting pay of $36.63 for the 2nd shift, with pay rates set for new hires and increasing over time. You will assist in the assembly, fabrication, and weld preparation of aerospace metal ducting systems. This role combines duties of CNC Lathe or CNC Mill Setup Specialist, Journeyman Machinist, and Tool Maker Specialist.

Responsibilities

  • Perform close tolerance set-ups of CNC Lathes/Mills, Conventional Lathes/Mills, and other machine shop equipment.

  • Validate and optimize new CNC programs.

  • Suggest improvements to existing CNC programs for continuous improvement.

  • Start a tool and complete it to final approval.

  • Perform grinding of own form tools.

  • Operate all necessary equipment such as tool grinders, surface grinders, drill presses, pedestal grinders, power saws, arbor presses, mills, lathes, rotary tables, optical comparators, and other machine shop equipment.

  • Obtain maximum work output from all machinery and equipment used.

  • Handle receiving, issuing, checking, recording, storing, and related inventory control functions.

  • Perform layout operations such as detailing tools or dies, and layout parts like raw castings, forgings, and sheet metal parts.

  • Fabricate tools and dies to exacting tolerances, including Class 'A' jigs and fixtures, drill jigs, check fixtures, dies for sheet metal parts, progressive or compound dies, and form and draw dies.

  • Prove dies and tooling and perform rework as required.

  • Complete necessary sequences of operations and layouts involving rotary tables, compound angles, and exacting tolerances.

  • Maintain and verify records of all tooling locations within the area.

Essential Skills

  • Experience with CNC, lathe, machine operating, grinder, mill, conventional machining, tool and die, and fabricating.

  • Proficiency in tool making, conventional lathe operations, and fabricating.

  • Inspection skills with blueprints, thin-wall, thin-gauge, tubing, titanium, Inconel, and stainless steel.

  • Familiarity with basic hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, and mallets.

  • Ability to use standard manufacturing measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, pin calipers, tape measures, scales, height gauges, and depth gauges.

  • Capability to work with tight tolerances such as + or - .001”.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to interpret blueprints, work orders, and production planning documents.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, including production control and other production/engineering documentation.

  • Ability to perform quality work in a safe and efficient manner.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience in a manufacturing environment, especially in aerospace.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
