Job Purpose/Overview

Acting as a subject matter expert, Manager/Senior Manager, Process Development, will be responsible for identifying methods to improve and optimize the design of our products and to over-see the transfer of products into the manufacturing area. Collaborating with other technical and manufacturing associates, identify ways to improve the processes surrounding purification, conjugation, formulation, and calibration; and troubleshoot and resolve any chemical/biological/assay issues that may arise. Provides technical and sustaining support to our consumables manufacturing area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This position is responsible for leading chemical and biological manufacturing process development related to the scale up, transfer and manufacture Antech point-of-care consumables. In addition, the position will assist in the development of analytical measurement systems in support of R&D, manufacturing, and quality. The position is uniquely positioned to make major contributions across the organization.

  • Lead a team in the development of analytical measurement of surfaces, proteins, and other reagents.

  • Establish process-product linkages through analytical method development.

  • Oversee analytical method validation.

  • Direct process development activities (surface chemistry qualification, and printing formulation and method development) in support of product development and scale efforts.

  • Assist in the development and qualification of new conjugation methods.

  • Vendor selection and management, when required.

  • Develop and mentor staff; provide direction and support; create goals designed to increase technical competencies and further professional development.

  • Foster collaboration and communication with cross-disciplinary functional groups in the development, implementation, and execution of company’s strategic vision and objectives.

  • Identify strategic opportunities for process improvements.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Master’s or PhD in biochemistry, biophysics, analytical chemistry or similar

  • At least five years of biotechnology industry experience in these areas:

  • Surface characterization, using spectroscopic ellipsometry, and colorimetric or fluorometric assays.

  • Analyzing proteins/antibodies by chromatographic methods (reverse-phase, HIC, and/or analytical SEC), and fluorescence methods.

  • Protein bioconjugation using click chemistries and NHS, EDC, maleimide or any combination thereof.

  • Array development and manufacturing including peptide, protein or nucleic acid arrays.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including technical presentations and presentations across all organizational levels

  • Effective and comfortable leading teams

  • Experience in communicating complex results across organizational levels.

  • Strong organizational, analytical and project management skills.

  • Knowledge of surface chemistry, including surface analytical measurements and process development.

  • Ability to build positive relationships within all levels of the organization.

  • Highly organized and able to balance multiple demands and priorities.

Working Conditions

The associate is regularly required to apply manual dexterity, including hand/wrist flexibility, for computer keyboarding. The associate frequently is required to sit for extended periods of time, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The associate is frequently required to hear and speak in order to use the telephone, make presentations and communicate with people in an office environment. The associate is occasionally required to sit and stoop, bend, kneel, or crouch. The associate must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.

The associate will primarily work in a typical office environment including use of cubicles, computers and overhead lighting. Temperature extremes will be minimal to nonexistent. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The associate will be required to use a computer, spreadsheets, database management, email, and the Internet. The associate is frequently required to use a calculator; fax, copy machine, and phone system. The associate must occasionally use media equipment such as an overhead projector, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Teams.

The Target Pay Range for this position is $116,380 - $150,000 annually. At Mars, pay decisions are determined using factors such as relevant job-related skills, experience, education, training and budget.
