Position Summary
OWNCS Middle School is seeking a dedicated and passionate Mandarin teacher for the 2024 - 2025 school year who will be the primary connection between world languages and the school’s International Baccalaureate (IB) framework. This position involves teaching Mandarin as a foreign language and a passion for fostering cross-cultural understanding.
Job Responsibilities:
Create engaging and culturally relevant lessons that promote language acquisition and fluency tailored to students learning a new language.
Assess student progress through regular evaluations and provide constructive feedback to support their language development.
Foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment, encouraging students to communicate in Mandarin.
Collaborate with colleagues to integrate Mandarin language learning with other disciplines and enhance interdisciplinary connections.
Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in language teaching and pedagogy.
Any other duties that the Principal deems necessary for the school.
Primary Tasks
The Mandarin teacher will introduce students to ancient and modern Chinese culture. Students will learn how to write in Mandarin characters, the unique meaning of each character, and character development over the centuries. Students will learn how to speak and understand using the tones accurately. Students will compare Chinese customs to the unique cultural customs represented in our classrooms. Students will practice reading in Mandarin characters and listening to spoken dialogues at a native speed. Students will also learn about Chinese folk tales and Chinese holidays.
Engage in differentiated instruction to bridge gaps, optimize learning, and
meeting individual students; learning needs and styles.
Plan for individual students based on their unique learning needs so all students
are appropriately engaged and challenged.
Measure student achievement of and progress toward the learning objectives
and big goals with formative and summative assessment tools.
Provide ongoing and timely feedback to students on their progress towards
meeting big goals by frequently checking for understanding.
Use data to reflect on effectiveness of lessons and student achievement
progress in order to improve instruction and personal practice.
Communicate and reinforce high expectations and standards for behavior and
academic performance, aligned with the OWNCS culture and core values.
Required Education and Skills
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education or related discipline from US
accredited university or college.
Required - NYS Teacher’s Certification
Knowledge of NY State Learning Standards
Must have appropriate credentials as designated by New York State Education
Department and in accordance with definitions and requirements to be
designated a highly qualified and certified teacher as defined by NCLB.
Must be authorized to work at OWN Charter Schools through appropriate
NYSED fingerprint clearance.
Must demonstrate competency in all areas of content responsibility and be
computer literate.
Must be able to communicate through superior written and oral communication skills.
Exhibit a high caliber of expertise in subject matter. Work on multiple projects and respond to requests and deadlines in an accurate, timely manner. Make sound decisions within the parameters of authority. Be courteous, professional, and tactful at all times.
Maintain a positive working relationship with faculty, staff, board members,
parents, students, authorizer, and the community.

$ 67,818 + depending upon education and experience .
