DESCRIPTION

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is a nationally recognized and award-winning organization with 1,100 full-time/part-time staff and a budget of $85 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community, including: Approximately 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3 public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas.

The Department provides free and fee-based recreational programs and leisure opportunities, both self-directed and organized, for people of all ages and cultures. Youth programs include free youth sports for ages 5 to 14 serving nearly 10,000 participants annually, summer and vacation day camps, 2,100 recreational and educational classes, sailing and aquatics instruction, teen center activities, skateboarding opportunities, and supervised afterschool and weekend activities at parks and schools.

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, Community Recreation Bureau, has two immediate openings for an unclassified WRAP Site Director - Recreation Leader X (Non-Career). The WRAP (Winners Reaching Amazing Potential) Expanded Learning Program is a structured after-school program operated in partnership with Long Beach Unified School District at LBUSD campuses. It offers a balanced mixture of academic enrichment, homework assistance, and physically and emotionally healthy activities that are fundamental components of youth development.

Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Under the direction of a supervisor, design, plan, and oversee implementation of a site program that includes homework assistance, tutoring, academic enrichment, and physical recreation.

  • Manage and supervise program staff.

  • Oversee participant behavior, program risk management, and safety of participants and staff.

  • Maintain accurate records.

  • Develop and maintain a cooperative relationship with school administration, faculty, support staff, and the parents of participants.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

This position is open to all candidates who meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Must meet at least one of the options below:

  • (Option A) - Three (3) years (or equivalent 750 hours total) of part-time experience (paid or unpaid) working in after school programming for school-aged youth, academic enrichment program or a related field ;OR,

  • (Option B) - Seventy-two (72) units of college education, including a minimum of 16 units in recreation, childcare or a related field ;OR,

  • (Option C) - A combination of education and experience as outlined above.

  • Must have completed 48 or more units at an accredited college or university, OR must be able to successfully pass a Literacy and Math Proficiency Test administered by Long Beach Unified School District.

  • Must have access to reliable transportation for all job responsibilities.

  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Be willing to work a consistent schedule between the hours of 1:00pm-7:00pm Monday-Friday during the school year and 8:00am-5:00pm during school breaks.

  • Be willing to assist various programs at various site locations.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, Zoom, Google Meets, Forms, Documents, etc.

  • Experience working with children and adults with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.

    The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • Outstanding customer service and strong organizational, administrative, and program management skills.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.
