DESCRIPTION

THE DEPARTMENT

The mission of the Department of Public Works is “to maintain and enhance the City’s infrastructure and environment for the benefit of the public.” The Department’s core services are focused on providing for and maintaining safe and efficient infrastructure for the community, providing for sustainable environmental protection including water quality and waste collection and diversion, and safely and efficiently designing, constructing, delivering, protecting and maintaining services for public facilities and public rights-of-way. The Department has six bureaus: Business Operations, Engineering, Environmental Services, Project Management, Public Service, and Transportation Project Management. The Department has over 580 budgeted positions with an annual operating budget of $250 million and an annual capital improvement program budget of $150 million. THE POSITION

The Department of Public Works is seeking a part-time Administrative Analyst I Non-Career to work in the Community Information Division of the Business Operations Bureau. The Community Information Division oversees external communication for the greater Long Beach Community regarding capital improvement projects, traffic and engineering projects, and facilitates the community input and outreach process. In addition, the division shares key information to a department of 500+ employees across six bureaus and various work functions.

Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The position will:

  • Perform professional, administrative duties within the Community Information Division for tasks related to public education campaigns for Measure A capital improvement projects.

  • Compose and publish communication materials for both print and digital media in alignment with the City's Language Access Policy.

  • Compile and analyze data gathered from community survey outreach campaigns.

  • Schedule, organize, speak at and moderate community meetings for providing updates and gathering public input on City infrastructure projects.

  • Meet with business and public leaders to develop relationships, gather data, and report back to manager to present findings and recommendations on effective outreach.

  • Perform other related duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public or Business Administration, or a closely related field (proof required) .

  • Two or more years of professional experience as an Assistant Administrative Analyst or an equivalent position.

  • A Master’s Degree in one of the preceding fields may be substituted for one-year of the required experience.

  • Experience offering specific and substantial preparation for the duties of the position may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

  • A valid California Class C Driver License.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent writing and public speaking skills.

  • Experience in culturally-competent community outreach.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
