Amazon System Development Engineer, In-House Controls, Central Engineering in London, United Kingdom
Description
We are seeking System Development Engineers to join our In-House Controls team within World-Wide Central Engineering. This global role requires a dynamic individual ready to travel and lead the deployment of cutting-edge automation solutions across our international network. The ideal candidate will have a continuous improvement mindset, demonstrate Bias for Action, and be prepared to "lead from the front" for on-site commissioning of automation lines. The ideal candidate's expertise in Codesys, Object-Oriented Industrial Programming (OOIP), and handling High-Impact Events (HIE) will be crucial in creating robust, scalable solutions.
Key Skills:
• Advanced technical expertise in industrial automation systems (TIA Portal 16+, Codesys 3.5, HMI, VFDs, Profinet, IO-Link)
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities for complex systems
• Hands-on experience with camera systems and Linux OS (preferred)
• Knowledge of Object-Orientated Programming (OOIP)
• Experience managing High-Impact Events (HIE) in an industrial setting
• Strong project management skills, including on-site commissioning and SAT processes
• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills across diverse cultural contexts
• Familiarity with international safety standards and certification processes
• Experience with automation solutions like conveyors, sorters, and robotic work cells
Additional Requirements:
• Willingness to travel up to 80% internationally, with extended stays up to three weeks
Key job responsibilities
• Lead global deployments of automation projects, including on-site commissioning and site acceptance tests (SAT)
• Develop and implement commissioning SOPs for new installations
• Manage High-Impact Events (HIE) to ensure minimal operational disruption
• Train RME Automation Engineers and Senior Technicians
• Drive continuous improvement
• Contribute to engineering reviews, impacting solutions for systems and architecture
• Analyze system performance and provide process optimization recommendations to Development Controls Engineers
• Lead a team of commissioning engineers (initially yellow badge)
About the team
Our In-House Controls (IHC) team within World-Wide Central Engineering develops, deploys, and scales automated solutions globally. We deliver pioneering solutions that integrate seamlessly into existing and new facilities worldwide. IHC will develop and deploy the software for all future WW AMZL automation, from software design through to commissioning and deployment and operational on-call support. The key benefits of our approach include:
• Standardised, integrator-agnostic control systems for all AMZL automation, reducing the requirement to develop and maintain bespoke solutions for each piece of automation.
• Control of development, deployment, fault finding and future upgrades, removing dependency on vendors.
• Generation of data and metrics to drive future improvements, removing dependency on vendors and ensuring comprehensive data collection.

Basic Qualifications
