Position Overview
International Corporation, a leading North American truck manufacturer with great products, a strong market position and best-in-class distribution network, has an exciting new opportunity for a High Voltage Battery Module and Pack Assembly Mechanical Engineer to join our join our Energy Storage Value Creation team. This is currently a hybrid position working 3 days in office and 2 days work from home a week at Rochester Hills, MI; Elmendorf, near San Antonio, TX; or Lisle, IL. (International reserves the right to update the current hybrid working status at any time).
The HV Battery Module and Pack Assembly Mechanical Engineer is responsible for ensuring the proper assembly of the RESS. This position requires a proactive approach to optimizing assembly processes, conducting rigorous testing, and integrating lessons learned into project documentation and requirements management systems. The work will include collaboration with our suppliers on externally sourced battery solutions in addition to co-development work with our TRATON partners.
Responsibilities
Assembly Oversight: Lead the assembly process for RESS units from inception to completion, ensuring adherence to design specifications, manufacturing constraints, and regulatory standards
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all assembly processes comply with relevant regulations and standards, including OSHA requirements, ergonomic guidelines, and safety protocols related to battery handling
Quality Assurance: Develop module and pack assembly quality requirements; implement interim and End-of-Line (EoL) testing protocols to detect and rectify assembly issues before they progress to the next phase of production
Process Optimization: Collaborate with the manufacturing team to optimize assembly processes, improve cycle-times, and address any issues affecting efficiency or quality
Continuous Improvement: Flow lessons learned from assembly processes into the Verification, Certification, and Testing (VCT) procedures, requirements documentation, and AUROS (Automated Requirements Object Synthesis) or equivalent systems
Problem Solving: Investigate and resolve assembly-related issues promptly, ensuring minimal disruption to production schedules and product quality
Documentation and Reporting: Maintain comprehensive documentation of assembly processes, test results, and corrective actions taken, ensuring traceability and compliance with quality management systems
Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams including design engineers, quality assurance, and operations to ensure seamless integration of assembly processes with overall project goals. Work with modeling teams to setup vibration, fatigue, and thermal FEA analyses.
Provide input in PFMEA reviews for multiple module and pack variant assemblies
Support the start-up of RESS assembly in the North American region
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology
At least 5 years of experience in product design/development
OR
Master’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology
At least 3 years of experience in product design/development
OR
- PhD in Engineering or Engineering Technology
Additional Requirements
- Qualified candidates, excluding current International Motors employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. Desired Skills
4+ year Mechanical or relevant Engineering degree from an accredited college or university
Proven experience in mechanical design and assembly of HV RESSes (HEV, PHEV, EV)
Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, including assembly techniques, materials, and tooling
Knowledge of regulatory requirements and standards applicable to battery assembly (e.g., OSHA, ANSI, ISO)
Experience in developing and implementing quality control procedures, including End-of-Line testing protocols
Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., Catia, Siemens NX) for design and documentation
Excellent analytical skills with a systematic approach to problem-solving
Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate across diverse teams and disciplines
Experience with automated assembly systems
Familiarity with battery chemistries and their implications for assembly processes
Prior exposure to AUROS (Automated Requirements Object Synthesis) or equivalent requirements management systems
Hands-on experience working on HV lithium-ion batteries
Familiar with design-for-serviceability concepts
Certification in Lean Six Sigma or similar process improvement methodologies
DFSS green or black-belt certification preferred
Ability and flexibility to travel, including internationally, for up to 2 weeks a few times per year
Ability and flexibility to travel internationally for approximately one to two months, preferred
