Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Plant Technician located at Canaday Station in Lexington , Nebraska. Position closes January 31, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.
This position will report to Canaday Operations Supervisor.
Position Summary
The incumbent is responsible for the safe reliable operation of Canaday Station. General responsibilities include conducting preventative maintenance checks, water sampling, and switching in the 115kV and 230 kV substation. Assist Water System Maintenance Technician in performing maintenance and construction on canals, conveyance structures, and associated District right-of-ways and roadways.
Education, Training and Experience
Incumbent must be recommended based on the Power Plant Operator Selection System (POSS) results, AND
Two-year technical degree in power plant technology or similar discipline, OR
Equivalent military training, OR
High School Diploma/GED and 5 years’ experience as listed below.
Commercial power plant operation, mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, or instrument and control maintenance experience is required. Other work experience or demonstrated performance indicating that the applicant has the skills and ability to perform the required duties of the position may be substituted for the specified number of years of experience outlined above.
Licenses and/or Certifications
Must be able to certify in the District Switchman Training Program.
Class B CDL with Airbrake and Combination endorsements preferred, but not required
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Operate the boiler and turbine/generator controls including boiler feedwater, boiler fuel, forced draft fans, induced draft fans, circulating water system, condensate pumps, service water, and plant air systems.
Receive and complete switching orders as directed by the Transmission Control Center in order to perform 115kV and 230kV switching.
Effectively address and handle emergency situations as they occur and perform all functions necessary for unit startups and shutdowns.
Revise operating procedures and develop/write new procedures as operating conditions change, and new equipment is installed.
Conduct Safety and Preventative Maintenance inspections and repair equipment as needed.
Operate water plant equipment and conduct water samples as needed on the boiler.
Work rotating shifts and overtime as required to maintain plant coverage.
Accountable for other duties as assigned.

Salary Information - Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth. In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range. Successful applicants will be provided more information regarding the incentive program at the time of an interview.
Pay Grade - 13 Hourly
Typical Pay Grade Starting Salary Range: $39.50 - $49.38
Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska) Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.

Retirement Savings
NPPD employees may participate in two retirement plan options – a 401(k) plan and a 457(b) plan. Both plans allow for pre-tax or Roth contributions. After the first six months of employment, the 401(k) plan includes a generous matching contribution from NPPD. The five-year vesting period begins on an employee’s hire date. Our retired employees are eligible for retiree healthcare benefits as well as a life benefit paid out to designated beneficiaries upon their passing.
