Job Introduction

The Clearwater Region is looking to fill two benefited 8-month and three non-benefited 5-month Habitat Technicians for the Craig Mountain Wildlife Management Area. Main responsibilities include technical duties and habitat development relating to wildlife conservation, management, and research. Start and end dates for the 2025 field season will be flexible.

Dates needed:

Benefited 8-month technician: March through November

Non-benefitted 4-month technician: April/May through August

Technicians will be compensated at \$17.32/hr

General Information

The selected applicants will conduct habitat development projects, noxious weed control, plant surveys, facility maintenance, and access management activities on public and private land within the Clearwater Region. Majority of this work will be located on the Craig Mountain Wildlife Management Area (CMWMA). Other work locations might include the Red River WMA, Joseph Plains Habitat Area, and the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest. The duties of these positions are diverse and occasionally overlap with other departments.

Successful applicants will be able to perform physically demanding activities such as lifting up to 50lbs, packing backpacks with 40-50lbs, hiking 8+ miles on rough and steep terrain, and working in adverse weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodations. Additionally, some of these positions will require individuals to work at remote duty stations for extended periods of time with bi-weekly resupply. All individuals will be involved in weekly work trips to various duty stations throughout the season. These positions typically work a 4 day/10-hour work week. Friday and weekend work might occur.

Benefited positions receive medical, vison, and dental insurance. They also participate in the state retirement system (PERSI), accrue vacation and sick leave, and receive paid holidays.

Responsibilities

Primary tasks for the CMWMA position include working as a team with 3-6 other technicians to conduct noxious weed control, maintain fence lines, complete plant surveys and identification, use and maintain ATVs, herbicide spray equipment and chemicals, and use navigational equipment. Other work responsibilities include data collection, facility maintenance, plowing and planting fields, camping at remote cabins to perform maintenance, and monitoring for noxious weeds. Successful candidates may also be tasked with maintaining Habitat Improvement Projects (HIP), which include planting seedlings, fence construction, and chemically treating noxious weeds. All responsibilities require the use of UTVs/ATVs, 4WD trucks, tractors, chainsaws, trimmers, augers, and power tools. Experience with these habitat management tools and techniques are desired but not required. Training will be provided.

Along with these tasks, benefited technicians have additional responsibilities including leading a 26 person crew, coordinating with the senior technician, training crew members, assisting in the development of habitat projects, and occasionally supervising volunteer and/or inmate crews in habitat development projects.

Qualifications

Knowledge of at least one of the following: 1) Good knowledge of wildlife ecology and habitat requirements and some knowledge of wildlife habitat including evaluation and management practices; OR 2) Good knowledge of biology, zoology, botany, conservation biology or closely related discipline. Experience recording, summarizing, analyzing, and synthesizing biological data using a personal computer to manage data. These are usually obta ned by pursuing a college level degree in a wildlife related field.

All prospective technicians must have a strong work ethic, the ability to get along with others, self-motivated, and reflect a desire and willingness to be tasked with new challenges in a professional setting. Applicants should also demonstrate good communication skills, interact with the public in a professional and positive manner, and be comfortable working independently and in a team environment. Individuals should be willing to learn how to maintain and operate equipment for related responsibilities. Must have a valid drivers license. Applicants must be willing to obtain an apprentice applicators license (training provided).
