Job Introduction: We are seeking an 8-month temporary Fishery Technician (benefitted) to assist with multiple projects focused on restoring stream habitat conditions for wild steelhead population and evaluating juvenile salmonid downstream migration, all on the rivers of north-central Idaho.
During the first four months, the employee will be a member of a crew conducting trapping operations on the Snake and Salmon River Basins to evaluate the effects of hydropower operations on juvenile salmon and steelhead survival. During the last four months, the employee will assist the stream habitat restoration program implement a stream restoration project to enhance growth and survival of juvenile wild steelhead and conduct a wide array of monitoring and evaluation surveys designed to assess the success of the restoration program. This position will also have the unique opportunity to spend several weeks helping with a large-scale rotenone project being conducted to restore native Bull Trout in a group of high mountain lakes and their outlet streams.
Responsibilities: This position provides an incredible opportunity for working with a wide variety of wild salmonid monitoring and habitat restoration projects.
Wild Salmon/Steelhead Monitoring Program Responsibilities:
Operate and maintain large fish traps under variable conditions. The technician is expected to handle, PIT-tag and collect biological information from juvenile salmonids, along with maintaining field equipment and managing data. Other duties include operating winches, chainsaws, and power tools. Applicants must be flexible on their schedule depending on project needs, stream conditions, weather, and other factors. Some incumbents will be stationed remotely in White Bird, Idaho during their shifts.
Habitat Restoration Program Responsibilities:
Conduct stream habitat and water quality monitoring, evaluation and monitoring of completed restoration projects, assisting with implementation of a new stream restoration project, and working with private landowners, other agencies, and engineers to help develop future projects. In addition, these responsibilities will include data collection, management, and entry into project databases. This position will work both in a team setting and independently. The work schedule will be primarily Monday to Friday, with possible weekend/holiday work. There may also be the potential for overnight camping trips in the field.
Bull Trout Restoration Project Responsibilities:
Assist lead biologist with duties as assigned. This project will include rotenone applications to multiple high mountain lakes and their outlet streams. Rotenone application will be conducted by boat, backpack sprayer, and drip stations. Water quality, fish sampling, and project monitoring surveys will also be conducted. This project includes several 5-7 day remote camping trips.

Qualifications: A bachelors degree in Fisheries or related field, or equivalent experience and training is preferred. Individuals with good data ma agement skills, experience with Microsoft Excel, and experience working with adult and juvenile anadromous salmonids may be given preference. Successful candidate must be able to work independently and in a team setting, follow established sampling and data entry protocols, and demonstrate a high degree of initiative and problem-solving ability. Applicants must be able to interact with the public in a positive and professional manner.
