Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Research Associate - Machine Learning in High Energy Physics in Lemont, Illinois

The High Energy Physics Division (HEPD) at Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position to conduct research in machine learning (ML) for applications in High-Energy Physics (HEP).

We seek highly qualified candidates with experience in ML algorithms including unsupervised techniques. The candidate is expected to lead an effort to prepare generalized ML techniques for data quality (DQ) monitoring/assurance for tasks across multiple HEP experiments. Among the experiments with Argonne involvement are ATLAS at CERN, DUNE, g-2, Mu2e, LSST-DESC, LZ, SPT and CMB-S4. Experience with the data from any of these experiments is preferred but not required.

The candidate is also expected to work closely with computational experts at the Computational Science (CPS) division. Argonne is a multidisciplinary national laboratory and offers an exciting campus atmosphere in which to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects, at both the national and international levels. The initial appointment will be for one year, with possibility of renewal for another two years and is based at Argonne National Laboratory (Lemont, Illinois).

Position Requirements

  • The candidates must have received a PhD degree in computer science, computer engineering, data science, high energy physics, or a related discipline within five years of the start of the appointment

  • Experience with unsupervised ML algorithms such as autoencoders, clustering

  • Programming expertise in Python, or another scientific programming language is highly desirable
