Job Summary:
The MIG Welder uses a Metal Inert Gas welding process to join metal pieces together by melting them with an electric arc, following blueprints and specifications to create functional metal structures, requiring tasks like reading plans, preparing materials, setting up welding equipment, performing welds in various positions, inspecting weld quality, and maintaining a safe work area.
Kay (Essential) Responsibilities:
- Reading blueprints; interpreting technical drawings and welding symbols to understand project requirements and dimensions.
- Material preparation; cleaning, cutting, shaping, and aligning metal components before welding.
- Setting up welding equipment; selecting the appropriate wire gauge, gas mixture, amperage, and voltage settings based on the metal being welded.
- Performing welds; executing welds in various positions (flat, vertical, overhead) using the MIG welding torch, ensuring proper penetration and bead appearance.
- Quality control; inspecting welds for defects like cracks, porosity, or improper fusion, using visual and measurement tools.
- Troubleshooting; identifying and resolving issues with welding equipment or weld quality.
- Safety practices; adhering to safety protocols, wearing appropriate protective gear, and maintaining a clean work area.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on welding equipment as needed to ensure proper functioning.
Required Sills:
- Proficiency in understanding of welding principals, different types of metal and welding techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
- Attention to detail, ability to identify and correct minor imperfections in welds.
- Basic math skills, calculating measurements and material requirements.
- Must have the ability to determine if the welds made are good by utilizing a defined process, Weld Nugget test.
Qualifications:
- Technical certification or training in welding is preferred
- Highschool diploma or equivalent
- Previous experience as a MIG Welder or in a similar welding role
