KBR’s global business comprises two main segments – Sustainable Technology Solutions (STS) and Government Solutions (GS). This role sits within STS in the Integrated Solutions business unit. Integrated Solutions is the engineering and project delivery group providing services which include front-end and detailed engineering, procurement, construction services, and program management primarily in the hydrocarbons and energy transition industries.

We are seeking a Head Consultant, Refining to work as part of the KBR Consulting International team. Successful candidates will be key members of the team providing consulting services and contributing to business development activities across the oil refining sector (including the traditional oil refining sector together with energy transition areas of sustainable aviation fuel, bio-fuels generally, refinery decarbonization and refinery / petrochemical integration).

KBR Consulting has offices in four main operating centres (Houston, Leatherhead, Abu Dhabi and Singapore). KBR Consulting International covers KBR’s Consulting business globally outside of the Americas. The Head Refining Consultant will report to the Director of KBR Consulting International (who is based in Leatherhead, UK). The successful candidate will be based in Consulting International’s main office in Leatherhead (UK).

The candidate will have the following primary responsibilities:

  • Oversight of the delivery of studies in the refining sector from pre-feasibility through to Pre-Feed, assuring technical quality with on-time and budget delivery.

  • Growing KBR Consulting’s project portfolio and revenue in the refining sector through defining strategic direction and undertaking business development activities, working with the Global Head of Refining for KBR Consulting.

  • Interfacing with other parts of the KBR organization to grow incremental revenue from existing projects.

  • Providing technical and commercial inputs and oversight into client proposals.

  • Developing Consulting capacity and capability in the refining sector through recruitment and development of consulting team members.

  • Acting as a Subject Matter Expert within candidate’s area of refining expertise.

The candidate should have excellent organizational skills and be good at communicating and guiding others. He or she may be required to work projects, thereby necessitating excellent ability to multi-task, work without supervision, exercise good judgment and communicate with colleagues in the wider KBR organisation.

Requirements and Qualifications

The successful candidate is expected to have a relevant number of years' industry experience with a specific technical and/or commercial focus in the Refining sector. He or she should be able to demonstrate depth of experience and knowledge in a number of the following services areas:

  • Oil Refining overall technical understanding.

  • Oil refining technologies (Open Art and Licensed), including traditional refining and energy transition areas of SAF, bio-fuels and decarbonisation;

  • Oil refining economics and product markets.

  • Interfaces between refining and petrochemicals.

  • Industry competitiveness/awareness.

  • Feasibility and configuration studies.

  • Process design.

  • Process operations and improvements.

  • Project execution strategies.

  • Direct sales experience.

The candidate should also:

  • Be a senior professional with strong personal drive and credibility with both internal and external stakeholders in the oil refining sector.

  • Be a high energy individual with a desire to make a difference and offer direction to the consulting refining business and provide suggestions for improvement & recommendations.

  • Be able to undertake and support business development. May serve as a proposal manager on large pursuits, gaining executive approvals where required, through to final contractual negotiations.

  • Be able to project manage Consultancy projects. May execute some projects as project manager and so must be flexible and able to adapt to changing project-related priorities and deliver high quality, accurate work within required deadlines.

  • Manage successful execution and conclusion of refining projects executed for KBR Consulting International.

  • Participate in cross fertilisation of work between KBR departments and developing a ‘OneKBR’ approach to execute projects.

  • Develop and maintaining customer relationships, ensuring customer satisfaction at project level and resolving any issues.

  • Liaise with the Consulting Director to ensure the projects are adequately resourced.

  • Review project obligations and ensuring management of change including variation orders.

  • Feedback and review of project managers to ensure they are adequately supported and developing their skills.

  • Develop of project close out aspects including knowledge sharing, lessons learned and project case study preparation for marketing materials.

  • Manage risks to avoid delays or reputational damage.

  • Oversee project managers, to ensure that work is completed on time and within budget, to a high standard.

  • Train, develop and mentor the next generation of the Consulting Refinery team.

  • Have existing client relationships in their respective areas of expertise.

  • Be able to travel for business trips at short notice.

  • Be fluent in spoken and written English. Additional languages are a plus.

The candidate must demonstrate competence in the following:

  • Able to work within a ‘sell-do’ model.

  • Being a strong self-starter and motivated to succeed.

  • Providing practical front-end consulting – including scoping, selling and delivery.

  • Having excellent communication skills including ability to produce concise reports and presentations appropriate for all levels.

  • Having confidence to work at all levels of a client organisation (Board to Technician)

  • The desire to expand role and be adaptable to client’s needs.

  • Being able to contribute to preparation of proposals, execution plans and budgets.

  • Identifying new opportunities and leads; and

  • Supporting a continuous improvement culture and identifies gaps, develops work processes, tools and methodologies to drive productivity and growth.

KBR Consulting, through the incorporation of KBR’s wholly owned subsidiary Granherne, draws on a heritage of over thirty five years specialising in the front end phases of oil & gas field, refinery and petrochemical development projects from pre-feasibility, through feasibility and pre-FEED, up to and including preliminary FEED phases.
