Join the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission’s ( WSSC Water) General Counsel’s Office ( GCO ) as a Student Intern and work alongside experienced attorneys on a variety of challenging and rewarding legal projects.

The GCO plays a crucial role in supporting WSSC Water’s mission to deliver safe, reliable and sustainable water and wastewater services.
Student interns build valuable legal and professional skills in research, writing, and advocacy, while learning about different areas of the GCO’s work. The student intern will assist attorneys in the GCO with a variety of tasks associated with their practices. This will include involvement with all aspects of the office’s litigation practice, procurement issues, employment issues, environmental issues and any other legal assignments as required by the GCO .

Position Summary Information
General Summary
The Student Intern – Legalwill assist attorneys in the General Counsel’s Office ( GCO ) with a variety of tasks associated with their practices. This includes involvement with all aspects of the office’slitigation practice, procurement issues, employment issues, environmental issues and any other legal assignments as required by the GCO .
Essential Functions
· Conduct legal research, and will draft legal memoranda, correspondence, pleadings, and interrogatories (and other discovery requests).
· Compile documents and prepare responses to Maryland Public Information Act requests, discovery requests and subpoenas.
· Prepare and file legal pleadings in Maryland courts and administrative forums, as necessary.
· Assist attorneys in the GCO at legal proceedings, depositions, and client meetings.
· Assist GCO attorneys in other projects, duties, and matters, as required.
Other Functions
· Assemble case materials by collecting, organizing, and summarizing information, documents, reports, and evidence.
· Assist GCO attorneys in trial preparation by preparing trial briefs, exhibits, subpoenas, evidence, and motions.
· Maintain the confidential nature of client communications.
· Participate in Commission-wide student internship activities as directed by the General Manager.
· Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
· Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite computer applications, especially Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
· Must be able to perform computerized legal research using Westlaw Edge®.
· Must be able to provide high-quality work in a timely manner, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and keep all matters confidential.
Minimum Education, Experience Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree
· Completion of 1+ years of law school
Additional Requirements
Must have dependable transportation to drive to various Courts
Preferences
Completion of 2+ years law school preferred.
